La Lagune is rated as one of the top wines in the Haut-Médoc, a Third Growth château which consistently produces top-end claret. In the famous 1855 classification, it was the highest-ranked château from outside the Left Bank’s famous communes. The château was built in 1715 and the vines followed not long after, but by the 1950s it had fallen foul of the troubling economic times and was in need of significant investment. Georges Brunet came to its rescue in 1954 and spent three busy years restoring the château and its vineyards back to its former glory. A continued period of investment followed, during which La Lagune was sold to Champagne Ayala followed by the Frey family where it remains today. La Lagune is the most southerly of the Grand Cru Classé estates and its south-facing gravel hillside is farmed organically; soon to be confirmed as biodynamic. Cabernet Sauvignon leads here, followed by Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot.
