Jim Barry was the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley in 1947, and the winery that bears his name has become one of the most well regarded in south Australia. His son Peter and grandchildren Tom, Sam and Olivia now run the estate, which encompasses vineyards in the Barossa Valley and Coonawarra as well as 200 hectares in the Clare Valley. There is something for everyone in Jim Barry wine – from the premium Armagh Shiraz to the micro-batch Florita Riesling. Don’t also ever let it be said that this Aussie winery takes itself too seriously. The Barry family donned disco wigs and flares to promote the 50th anniversary of its Watervale Riesling, and there is a ‘Cover Drive’ Cabernet Sauvignon – made from grapes grown in a vineyard that was once, of course, a cricket ground.
