The Myburgh family have been making wine at their Western Cape estate since 1756, but it was only in the 1970s that the Meerlust estate ‘crossed the Rubicon’ and created the wine for which it has become famous. Nico Myburgh, the seventh generation of his family to be custodian, noticed while on holiday in Bordeaux that the terroir was much like his own in South Africa, with fruit slowly ripening in cooling sea breezes. He took the decision to start making Bordeaux-like blended wine. So was born Meerlust Rubicon, as it felt like this was a new frontier for red wine in this part of the world. Made from 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, Meerlust Rubicon is a stunning wine, augmented by a powerful supporting cast of reds and a solitary Chardonnay.
