Marqués de Riscal is one of Rioja’s most famous wineries, beloved by the literati. Ernest Hemingway and Salvador Dalí drank with relish its Reserva – the bottle in the gold net that is still undoubtedly its stellar cellar product. Marqués de Riscal Rioja Reserva is made from Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo grapes and is fresh, light and elegant. The winery was founded in 1858 and was the first in Rioja to age its wines in oak barrels – some for up to five years. Innovation has always been part of the Marqués de Riscal story, so it was fitting that the modernist American architect Frank Gehry should have designed the winery’s remarkable ‘City of Wine’ building in 2006 – an unmissable stop on any Rioja wine tour.
