Wine Copywriter - Freelance role

Lay & Wheeler is a fine wine merchant founded in 1854 which has successfully transitioned from horse and cart to a full-fledged e-commerce business. We sell wines online from over 600 producers from fine wine regions around the world. Our website acts as our shop window, and the information we offer is critical to the customer experience, and to driving sales.

We are looking for a strong, experienced writer with deep wine knowledge who can help us increase and enhance the content on our website, working flexibly and remotely. The role includes both updating existing copy, and writing fresh copy for different areas of our website, from regional descriptions to wine producer introductions, and may include media (e.g. sourcing bottle shots) as well. We estimate it will involve about 20 hours per week, but may flex up or down depending on the business need.

  • Write new content for the website, including country, region, producer and wine descriptions, using independent research and information provided by the Buying team
  • Edit existing content which may be out of date or not in keeping with the Lay & Wheeler style and tone of voice
  • Coordinate the uploading of missing content, including bottle shots, wine information (e.g. grape varieties, ABV) and tasting notes
  • May include the uploading of this content to our website using our CMS, Kentico

Skills

  • Prior experience writing about wine (in any capacity - print, online), preferably within the UK market
  • Strong writing capabilities
  • Familiar with Google suite of products, Microsoft Word, and (preferably) a CMS like Kentico; preferably also experience with Adobe Photoshop
  • WSET Level 2 qualification at a minimum, preferably higher

Qualities

  • Knowledgeable and passionate about wine, a curious mind
  • Highly organised; able to follow a process
  • Efficient, with a strong work ethic
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Great communication
  • Self-starter, able to carry on individually and remotely

Need to know

  • This role can be based remotely, using collaboration tools like Slack and Zoom
  • Compensation will be commensurate with experience
  • The hours and days are flexible
  • Estimated 20-30 hours per week
