Financial Accounting Manager - Maternity Cover

We are looking for a highly qualified financial accounts manager to join our team as maternity cover beginning in October 2019.

This person will take on an integral role at Lay & Wheeler, working closely with the MD, buying team and customer care team.

We have built in a month-long transition period for this person to learn the role from the incumbent, with the opportunity for more time if needed or if an earlier start date is possible.

Primary responsibilities

  • Prepare the monthly accounts, including:
    • Balance sheet and general ledger reconciliations
    • Accruals and prepayments, and all journals
    • Management accounts with variance analysis against budget and supporting commentaries
  • Manage and maintain general accounting requirements, including:
    • Maintenance of Fixed Asset register
    • Annual audit process coordination
    • Support with annual statutory financial statements
    • Quarterly VAT returns
    • Bi-annual supplier payment reporting
    • Prepare annual budgets and any subsequent re-forecasts
  • Manage supply-related financial requirements, including currency hedging and purchasing contracts
    • Process invoices and authorise payments
  • Manage cashflow
    • Authorise customer payments
    • Authorise supplier payments
    • Report on cashflow versus budget and aid in any operational activities to manage number
  • Manage administration assistant
  • Administer payroll, pension, healthcare and P11D and PSA return
  • Ad-hoc analysis as required to support business decisions


  • Prior experience in an accounting and/or accounts management role, preferably within the wine industry
  • Experience with the Navision accounting system and Barclays Net Internet banking
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, preferably the entire suite of Microsoft products, including Outlook


  • Highly organised; able to follow a process
  • Enjoys numbers and reconciling them
  • Efficient, with a strong work ethic
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Great interpersonal skills and communication

Need to know

  • The position is based at our offices located between Colchester and Ipswich, though there will be opportunity for flexible working
  • This is a full time role, working 40 hours per week, as maternity cover
  • The target start date is 1 October 2019 or earlier if the candidate is available
  • The maternity cover will have access to our staff discount on wines. We host a number of team social events throughout the year. We also enjoy a weekly Ocado delivery to the office, Friday beers, the occasional ping pong game and any excuse to celebrate (Easter, American Thanksgiving. . .)
