Buying Support

As one of Britain’s oldest fine wine merchants, our team has always taken the utmost pride in our range of wines. Only by putting quality first have we been able to sustain over one hundred and sixty years of fine wine sales.

It is the responsibility of the buying team to look after this range of wines, which starts with our relationship with the producer directly, or in some cases the agency responsible for importing the wine. Buying activities extend past the decision to support certain producers: from market analyses and pricing work to organising tastings and ensuring suppliers are paid accurately and on time.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join the incumbent team of two to support in several key areas of fine wine buying at Lay & Wheeler, including:

Key activities

Analysis, forecasting & planning

  • Analyse previous campaigns & make recommendations based on past performance
  • Work with marketing communications manager and head of sales to ensure all wines are properly merchandised
  • Ensure appropriate marketing activity follows for all wines purchased

St Johns Wood support

  • Analyse performance of lines at Majestic St Johns Wood ‘store within a store’
  • Recommend merchandise based on analysis and observations in store, working with Buyer (Lay & Wheeler) and Fine Wine Merchandiser (Majestic)

Fine Wine Discovery Club buying

  • Forecast and manage Fine Wine Discovery Club product pipeline, including:
    • Bi-monthly case merchandising
    • Purchasing twice-monthly exclusives
      • En primeur offers
      • In stock offers
  • Manage relationship with Fine Wine Discovery Club team, ensuring they are properly briefed on wines and ideally have tasted them.

Success looks like

  • Wines bought to budget and on time, esp for SJW and FWDC
  • All lines properly merchandised, all ranges properly launched
  • Wines are set up in system accurately and on time with complete product information
  • Suppliers are satisified with the activities post sale: payment, pickup and delivery of wines
