Lay & Wheeler has been connecting the right people with the right wines from 1854 onwards as one of England’s longest-standing fine wine merchants.

With an expert team and an impressive range of the finest wines and spirits, the business, now privately held, is undergoing a period of expansion.

Context

We are looking for a Fine Wine Trader to join the Private Clients team, based in Mayfair, London. This highly motivated individual will work on buying and selling fine wine, working closely with the Director of Private Clients and support team.

Responsibilities

  • Supplement Lay & Wheeler’s core range, purchased directly from the winery or the primary agency in the UK market, with older parcels of perfect provenance
  • Work with existing contacts to open up further supply
  • Develop a core base of fine wine collectors, especially those who wish to store their wines in our new, state of the art facility, and who wish to participate in our growing brokerage service
  • Work with the wider Lay & Wheeler team to ensure the right wines and the right people connect, using a myriad of tools and systems across the business

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of fine wine buying and selling experience, with an keen palate and a passion for developing customer relationships
  • An expert in fine wine, ideally with an industry accreditation such as the WSET Diploma
  • An active and growing network of trade contacts in both the UK and Europe
  • An understanding of the UK fine wine trade and the global fine wine collectors’ market
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, especially by phone and email

  • A strong appreciation for what makes great service
  • Always happy to go the extra mile - a “roll up your sleeves and do it” approach
  • Keen to have a bit of fun day to day, with a love of teamwork and collaboration, including with customers
