Bordeaux 2011 – The price is right?

After the hype and press surrounding the 2009 and 2010 vintages, perhaps the bordelais can be forgiven for being reticent in making any proclamations about 2011, seen by all as being a far more difficult vintage. However, as first critics and then wine trade have been able to taste, it has been revealed that there are a number of success-stories in what has undoubtedly been a challenging year.

While Lay & Wheeler has successfully offered the fine wines of Bordeaux en primeur for many years, the coming together of Lay & Wheeler and Majestic over the last two years has further strengthened our position in Bordeaux with both Négociants and Châteaux. Majestic brings financial stability and, with a 12% market share (by value) of all Bordeaux sold in the UK off-trade, this will lead to some good allocations, making us a reliable place to buy en primeur.

Our entire sales and buying team travelled to Bordeaux this year to assess the vintage, giving us a broad view of the wines and the various success stories. Our full tasting notes are displayed, as well as the views of Nick Dagley, our buyer. We hope this gives you a clear picture of the vintage as a whole, as well as giving you a taste of our opinions on the individual wines themselves.

Showing really sweet and concentrated dark fruit on the nose. This follows onto the palate with dark cherry, cassis, spice and coffee. The tannins are fairly assertive but fine grained, giving good structure and texture. Really well made and will provide excellent early drinking pleasure, but will reward mid term cellaring. Château Ausone

2011 Château Ausone, 1er Grand Cru Classé (A) St-Emilion		6 Bottles	£0–£0
2011 Ausone displays an almost exotic nose, which is incredibly deep and concentrated. The palate shows explosive fruit, with blackcurrant compôte, Asian spice and hints of coffee. The texture is fabulous, with huge volume and satin-like tannins. This is one of the more large-scale 2011s, but is perfectly-judged, with equilibrium between the exotic fruit, refreshing acidity and - all importantly - ripe tannins. An epic wine! 2011 Chapelle d'Ausone, St-Emilion		3 Bottles	£0–£0
2011 Chapelle shows a wonderful deep purple hue. Sweet fruit and subtle oak lead into a glorious, satisfying palate. Vivid, strikingly pure fruit is surrounded by ripe tannins, giving a very pleasing mouthfeel. Precise, fresh and long, this shows what a good Right Bank vintage 2011 is. Château Batailley

One of the oldest estates in the Médoc producing a classic and typical Pauillac. Complex on the nose, with notes of cassis, chocolate and mocha, with a hint of cloves and cinnamon. Blackberries, chocolate notes and cream texture, with nuances of vanilla and nutmeg on the palate, there is a real plush richness to this wine. It is held together beautifully with very well integrated tannins and a soft vein of acidity running through the finish. An excellent wine that should not be missed! This fabulous wine displays a delightfully perfumed nose of black berry and cherry fruit, rose and violet alongside herbal, menthol nuances. These aromas lead through onto the palate which is thickly set with taught tannins, balanced by excellent concentration and structure. Château Beauséjour-Duffau-Lagarrosse

Quite closed and brooding on the nose, the palate opens out to reveal an immense wine, with mouthfilling dark berry concentration, dense tannins and creamy oak. However, there is also a vein of freshness here that lends balance to the weight and power on show and leads through to a surprisingly elegant, clean finish. Château Belair

With vines over a hundred years old planted on the famous plateau and the perfectly south-east facing slopes next to Ausone, this property is something of an undiscovered gem. Attractively ripe and juicy berry fruit, counterbalanced by a vein of fresh acidity and perfectly balanced tannins. There is presence and weight to the wine, which is unforced and elegant. Château Berliquet

This wine has a very powerful, dark, potent and intense nose of sweet ripe berries, vanillin, and mocha. It is extremely concentrated, rich and warm but the bright acidity on the palate provides a lovely freshness. The tannins are refined and sleek leaving a lasting impression of a very finely balanced wine that is resplendent in juicy, modern-style St Emilion character. Château Beychevelle

Care for the environment is a very major concern to the vineyard management team of Château Beychevelle, where they believe in producing high quality grapes in an environmentally friendly way. This is deep and brooding with dark fruits and a toasty edge. Quite spicy, with good concentration, black fruits are present, mirroring the aromas on the nose. The tannins are tightly wound, but balanced by a refreshing burst of acidity. Given time we expect this wine to unfold and develop into a stunning St-Julien. Dry, Red, Still France Leave 2018 – 2028

The expressive nose of dark cherries, cassis and blackcurrant is exceptionally pretty and yet propped up by a core of attractive toasty oak and shades of fresh eucalyptus leaf, herbs and spices. The palate is full, deep and round where the tannins are strong but not aggressive. This is a very impressive wine, which shows real promise. Dry, Red, Still France Leave 2015 – 2031
Château Brane-Cantenac

2011 Château Brane-Cantenac, Cru Classé Margaux		12 Bottles	£0–£0
Made, interestingly, with a proportion of Carmanère in the blend this year, as a response to temperature change. A little closed on the nose when tasted, but notes of dark berries come through with time. On the palate, this showed an immediate punch of sweet, ripe fruit, followed by a swathe of substantial, structural, but very finely-tuned tannins. The core here is dense and concentrated, balanced by a dart of freshness on the finish. A well-realised wine, with a clean, pure finish. Dry, Red, Still France Leave 2016 – 2029
Château Calon-Ségur

The addition of a small percentage of the late ripening petit-verdot has added a touch of florality to the red berry, cedar wood, and tobacco inflected nose. The vibrant berry fruit laden palate retains a real sense of poise and vigour, with tannins that are neither forced nor over-worked yet powerfully structured. An organoleptic, cerebral delight and a real masterclass in thoughtful and considered winemaking. Dry, Red, Still France Leave 2017 – 2028

2011 Marquis de Calon, Saint-Estèphe		12 Bottles	£156
Representing just 30% of production and with the majority of fruit sourced from low yielding merlot vines planted on drought resistant clay based soils. The ripe damson and fruitcake laden nose has a top note of dark chocolate whilst there is lively acidity and freshness to the front palate which is filled out with plump and fleshy plum fruit and a touch of spice. Tannins are fine grained and velvety in texture, the lasting impression is one of elegance, balance and refinement. Technical director Vincent Millet considers “2011 closer to 2010 than 2008 in terms of quality”. Merlot 80% / Cabernet Sauvignon 20% Dry, Red, Still France Leave 2015 – 2025
Château Canon

Owned and managed by Chanel, Château Canon has been going from strength over recent vinteages and is one of the success stories of 2011. Expressive and perfumed on the nose, with bramble fruit, lavender and toasty notes of cedar in the background. Deep, rich and opulent, with a mouthfilling soft velvet texture. Blueberries, blackcurrants and a very pure minerality, the minerality coming from the limestone soils which contain fossilized starfish! There are Intense tannins but these are balanced with the purity of the acidity running through. Dry, Red, Still France Leave 2018 – 2030
Château Canon La Gaffelière

2011 Château Canon La Gaffelière, Grand Cru Classé St-Emilion		6 Bottles	£216
Reputed just as much for his sartorial genius as for his kind and affable manner, Comte Stephan Von Neipperg is first and foremost a great winemaker, who feels very strongly about choosing the best fruit nature can give and treating it in a way that lets it express its terroir. Some of the best successes in 2011 have come from just such approaches, and this sumptuously luscious wine combines firm and tight tannins with a persistent core of raspberry liqueur and freshly roasted coffee beans. Low rainfall, free-draining gravel and sandy soils have resulted in reduced yields of smaller berries and a higher skin-to-juice ratio with impressive levels of concentration. Dusky blackberry and hedgerow fruit are in abundance with a subtly medicinal note of cedar and a lick of toasty new oak. A plush and inviting nose gives some sense of the ripeness and intensity to follow. The 2011 displays a beautifully fragrant cherry nose, leading on to ripe juicy fruit on the palate, with spicy undertones backed up by ample tannin and fresh acidity. An elegant wine. Château Cheval-Blanc

This is the first Cheval-Blanc to be produced in their brand new and visually stunning, state-of-the-art chais - enabling the team to pick and vinify each parcel of vines at optimum ripeness. Scented, floral top notes with a hint of lavender are overlaid by vibrant black berry fruit and a note of pure cocoa on the finish. A tour-de-force in winemaking and tannin management, the richness of weight and texture envelopes the mouth, whilst retaining an overall sense of freshness and elegance. LOW STOCK 2011 Le Petit Cheval, Grand Cru St-Emilion		6 Bottles	£600
Representing just 30% of production, in a particularly strong vintage for both clay based merlot and cabernet franc, this is the first Petit-Cheval to benefit from vinification in a custom built chais. An enticing garnet core of raspberry and blackberry fruit with hints of exotic spice and black pepper, showing wonderful purity and freshness. The palate is refined and well proportioned, with impressive clarity and intensity of flavour. Dry, Red, Still France Leave 2015 – 2022
Château Clerc Milon

2011 Château Clerc Milon, Cru Classé Pauillac		12 Bottles	£378
With vines bordering the prestigious first growth Mouton-Rothschild and under the same ownership since the 1970s, the wines produced at this estate considerably outshine its humble fifth growth status. A strikingly vibrant purple hue in the glass, the nose displays a pure vein of red plums and damsons with the merest note of tobacco. Initially brooding and densely structured with grippy tannins, the palate opens up to display succulent darks fruits, Christmas cake spice and dark chocolate. These flavours linger on the finish together with an impression of freshness and a suggestion of stony, mineral notes. Dry, Red, Still France Leave 2017 – 2028
2011 Château Clerc Milon, Cru Classé Pauillac		1 Magnum	£0–£0

They are not ready to make the blend yet but tasting a selection of the possible components can give you some idea of the wine to come…. Lot 6, picked on 15 September had quite a mineral streak with spice and terrific freshness. Lot 9 from 18 September was richer and denser with more barley sugar and orange flavours but still had great acidity. Lot 11, picked 20 September had fine tension and length – real elegance and subtle orange notes. Lot 12, from 21 September was dense and very very long. Lot 13, picked 26-28 September and therefore comprising some of the most concentrated berries but also some 'golden berries', resulting in a rich but very lively elixir. If these examples are anything to go by, this will be a very pure and elegant vintage with excellent freshness. My average score was 18." Julia Harding, Purple Pages. "Fine, complex and elegant. Very chocolatey on the nose, Clinet is creamy, velvety and mouth-wateringly delicious. The vineyards are found on the higher slopes in the commune, where there is deep gravel. This particular terroir encourages early ripening for the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which in turn helps produce an elegant and quite feminine wine. For the 2011 vintage there is very good concentration and a purity of fruit. A very interesting and pretty nose, herbaceous with blackcurrant leaf and lavender, dark plums and sweet spice. Near perfect growing conditions have resulted in what will certainly turn out to be a legendary vintage for d’Yquem. Exceptionally warm spring temperatures led to an early bud-break and subsequent flowering, this was followed by cooler conditions in early summer – allowing the fruit to retain freshness whilst developing aromatic complexity. Consistently warm conditions returned in August continuing until October, although 30% less precipitation was recorded over this period the rain showers that fell, did so at just the right time allowing for perfect conditions for the development of botrytis. As sugar levels were rigorously controlled, the fermentation was relatively quick and trouble-free. Intense and luminescent in appearance the nose shows wonderful aromatic complexity with notes of wild honey and acacia blossom. A lusciously ripe palate explodes with tropical fruit underscored by crisp citrus notes, beeswax and buttered toast. Perfectly proportioned and long on the finish. Christophe Salin, director of Barons de Rothschild has been very forthright about the way in which pricing will work this year, indicating that there should be a substantial cut in price for this wine compared with last year. "With Lafite we have the luxury of being able to sell at a high price, but we want to play by the rules and listen to the market. We don’t want to be individualists – Bordeaux is a collective work; we have power and duties so we need to play as a team." The wine is a very simple blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. 2011 Lafite-Rothschild is a huge, powerful effort that manages levels of concentration rarely equalled in this vintage as well as a velvety, nuanced style and wonderful balance, refined tannins and incredible length. This is a wine that starts big, and grows in stature all the time during the multi-layered finish. It may be hard to dethrone. Tannins are quite prominent at first and then the freshness from the acidity comes through balancing out. Overall a very good and well integrated wine. When asked whether the Château was having to change anything to compensate for climate change, Marie Descotis, who heads up the Château's research and development department, explained that their terroir is proving to be perfect for the somewhat warmer and drier conditions over the last few years, allowing their Cabernet Sauvignon to flourish. The blend this year is made up of 86% of this Cabernet, 10% Merlot and the rest split between Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The resultant wine is the most concentrated they have ever produced, yet it is also incredibly poised and balanced. Dark berry fruits, notes of woodsmoke and spice come through on the nose. The palate is immediately fresh and pure, with a layered sense of fine tannin, depth and power. There is a graphite-like grip to the structure, a definite minerality and a core of cool-natured, classic fruit. Despite the concentration and density in the wine, the balance is such as to give it an almost approachable sensation. Beautiful rather than pretty, this is an elegant and refined wine that shows what could be achieved in 2011 with great terroir and a deft hand. This has a lot of density and power, which Marie Descotis attributes to the drought and the small size of the grapes as a result. The 2011 is appealing and complex with floral notes and earthy, crushed bramble fruit the tannins are fine, ripe and firm. A (badly stored) magnum of 2001 drank beautifully at a recent lunch! Always a controversial wine, 2011 is no different. Loved by some for its concentration and ambition, others feel Pavie can be overworked. For me, 2011 treads the right side of this line. Thick, almost black, with glass-staining concentration. The nose is actually quite restrained, but brooding with potential. Dark berry fruits, chocolate and spice lead into a simply massive palate. Huge mouthfilling volume, with super-polished texture. There is a boat-load of black ripe fruit and rich spice, but importantly there is refreshing acidity. On the palate, this seems effortlessly balanced: a core of ripe attractive fruit hemmed in by very fine tannins and a zip of acidity. Incredibly charming, it won us all over. The vintage conditions at Vieux Château Certan were somewhat reminiscent of 1988, with a dry but not too hot summer that favoured Cabernet Franc.
