BORDEAUX 2009 – Believe The Hype
For anyone even slightly interested in fine wine, it is currently difficult to avoid the buzz of excitement from the wine trade about the 2009 vintage of Bordeaux. The Bordelais are never backward in coming forward when the vintage is good and certainly they have surpassed themselves in their efforts to communicate the glad tidings about 2009. Naturally, there is an element of hype in all this; however it does appear that, to all intents and purposes, 2009 is an excellent vintage.
The vintage conditions were textbook for the production of great Bordeaux; hot and dry at the right times, with cool nights and occasional rain, giving balance and aiding maturation. The resultant wines are said to be extremely concentrated, with huge, yet soft, tannins, giving them a plump, attractive nature, even when very young.
Our sales and buying teams have recently returned from Bordeaux, reporting largely positive information about the vintage and the wines tasted. They are currently working on pulling together all their views and information about the vintage and we will be publishing their full tasting notes next week
In the meantime, please visit our blog for more detailed reports from Bordeaux and our intended shopping list for Bordeaux 2009.

Views from Bordeaux:
"Comparisons with other vintages are proverbially difficult to make, but maybe we can say that 2009 is what 1982 or 1985 would have been if the vineyard and the yields had been managed as today, or what the 1947 would have been if the vinification had been controlled as today. All of those historic vintages seem to share the same sweetness of concentrated fruit as the 2009..."
Bill Blatch, negoçiant Vintex
"In terms of quality, I rate 2009 first, then 2005, then 2000."
François Mitjaville, Châteaux Tertre Rôteboeuf and Roc des Cambes
"2009 is riper and bolder than 2005."
John Kolasa, Châteaux Canon and Rauzan-Segla
"The grapes harvested at Vieux Château Certan were the best I have ever seen."
François Thienpoint, Negoçiant Wings
