Vintage Assets Programme

Wine Investment – a truly liquid asset!

The Lay & Wheeler Vintage Assets Programme® is a comprehensive investment cellar management service designed for the non-professional wine investor.

What is an investment cellar management service?

Using the accumulated knowledge of over 150 years in the fine wine industry, Lay & Wheeler has developed a dedicated Investment programme for Investors. The Programme’s Advisors aim to remove all of the complexity from the process, leaving you to enjoy the pleasure of building a fine and valuable cellar of wines. The progression from selection through sourcing, cellaring and eventual sale can be complex matters where expert advice enables a more informed decision to be made.

What will Vintage Assets provide?

The Vintage Assets Programme aims to provide you with in-depth advice over each step of the process of building a valuable investment cellar, whilst recognising the need to respect your individual requirements concerning capital outlay, timeframe and risk.

What is a liquid asset?

As with nearly every investment, the key is the balance between supply and demand. With a recognised and growing global demand for fine wines from leading producers and great vintages, the top wines can be expected to sell out many times over. This provides the ideal conditions for a flourishing secondary wine market, as collectors and traders seek particular wines. Additionally, as corks are pulled and wines enjoyed, supply of individual older vintages begins to dwindle, allowing values to rise with increased rarity.

What are the costs involved?

The average invested by clients of Lay & Wheeler’s Vintage Assets Programme is over £35,000, although £10,000+ is accepted.

Professional cellarage (including insurance @ full replacement value) costs £7.16 per case/year, including VAT. Please see our Portfolio Service for more details. A 0.25% - 1% annual management fee covers this comprehensive investment guidance.

Why choose Vintage Assets to invest in fine wine?

Proven Track Record - Over the last 20 years, the triple-digit return from investing in the wines of top producers from excellent vintages indicates that fine wine investment is ideal for those seeking to diversify their portfolio.

Tax Efficient Investment - Fine wines can be bought, stored and sold in bond, avoiding the requirement to pay UK Duty and VAT.

Fine wine can also be classified as a “wasting asset” and profits on the sale of private reserves are normally exempt from Capital Gains Tax.

HM Revenue and Customs’ policy in this area may change in the future, and individual circumstances may vary. Therefore, it is recommended that you seek advice from your Accountant before investing.

Market Transparency and Liquidity - The London International Vintners Exchange (Liv-ex) is the leading exchange for trading investment-grade wines between an international network of fine wine merchants. This has increased both liquidity and transparency in the market.

Since early 2006, the Liv-ex 100 index of investment-grade wines has been included in the Bloomberg list of recognised indices.
