Pale in colour, floral, with lemon zest aromas, this enlivening blend of Clairette with small amounts of Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, reveals an attractive zippy palate with greengage fruit, chalky minerality and citrussy acidity. A wine with plenty of verve, this is beautifully balanced, light and attractive. Very fine, great value and very individual.

2007 Syrah, La Rosine, Domaine Michel et Stéphane Ogier

Scented, spiced raspberry aromas, with a discreet stony mineral note. Supple, layered with an appealing freshness to its generous loganberry fruit. Gently creamy, by no means lacking density, with a pure, focused finish. Côte-Rôtie in miniature.

2007 Gigondas, La Tour Sarrazine, Domaine le Clos des Cazaux

This exceptional Gigondas comprises 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre. On the nose it reveals perfumed, smoky deep fruit, very finely expressed. On the palate it shows a great elegance, dark damsony berry fruit with hints of garrigue and silky fine tannins. Not a wine of huge proportion, the concentration here gently builds. This refinement is most welcome, as Gigondas as an appellation does not lack volume of fruit. Expressive and elegant, this is tautly-structured Gigondas of considerable promise.

2007 Crozes-Hermitage, Alain Graillot

Alain Graillot started making wine in 1985 and is now one of the most respected producers in the appellation. His Crozes-Hermitage is known for its purity, balance and natural expression of classic Syrah. This is vibrant and scented, with violet and berry notes. On the palate, this is balanced and pure, with savoury, peppery nuances. A highly impressive Crozes-Hermitage.

2007 Crozes-Hermitage, Cuvée Gaby, Domaine du Colombier

Intense perfumed hedgerow fruit on the nose. On the palate, bright fresh bramble fruit is to the fore. There is concentration and depth to this wine from the fine-grained tannic structure and long finish, however it is defined by its purity and finesse, which creates an elegant impression. This is truly lovely Syrah and a very fine Crozes.

2007 Gigondas, Domaine la Bouissière

The Rhone Valley excelled in 2007 and Thierry Faravel's wines always show a supple open nature, which does not hinder their ability to age, and - to our mind - makes them one of the finest domaines in Gigondas. Deep dark cherry with beautiful freshness on the nose, and a note of scented herb. The palate is striking; a lush low-acid style with copious quantities of creamy, gently baked, lightly-spiced cherry and damson fruit. Sweet ripeness, showing a round, open character - it is easy to pick up on this wine's early drinking appeal, and yet ten years cellarage will result in greater complexity. A wine to follow vintage in, vintage out.

2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, Pierre Usseglio

A blend of Grenache Blanc with Clairette and Bourboulenc. Pale in appearance with fresh aromas of pear and greengage and discreet grassy nuances too. There is a poise here that is not often found in white châteauneuf. This is a forward style with good purity and mouth-watering lemony acidity. Will prove very appealing in youth and may be very interesting with some years’ bottle age.

2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Signature, Domaine La Barroche

A profound, dark berry fruit nose, with ripe notes of pepper and spice. Lifted and perfumed, this is a full-bodied wine with a touch of garrigue. There is wonderful breadth on the mid palate with amazing textural richness and the tannins are ripe and powerful yet perfectly integrated. A superb expression of the vintage, which is not to be missed.

2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos Saint Jean

Fragrant on the nose, with notes of ripe black cherry and bramble fruit. On the palate, this is rounded and broad, with a real sense of concentration to the ripe, vibrant black fruit characters. There is a lovely sense of poise and balance here, with a vein of minerality and freshness running throughout. Pure, attractive Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

2007 Côte-Rôtie, Bernard Burgaud

Deep in hue, with dark cherry and berry fruit on the nose and hints of peppery spice. The typical purity and accessibility of Burgaud's Côte-Rôtie is here, with bold fruit of finely judged ripeness. The spice and pepper hints of the nose are in evidence too, as is a marked, stony minerality. A terrific, appealing Syrah with a fine depth of fruit.
