A powerful wine, with dark cassis and morello cherry fruit, as well as notes of mocha and black olive. The tannins are ripe and fine-grained and well integrated with the rich fruit body. Very long on the finish.

2001 Sperss, Gaja, Langhe, Piedmont

The colour is a medium ruby and the bouquet is an enticing combination of mixed red fruits, spice, liquorice, tobacco leaf and rose petals. The palate is powerful, muscular and even a little austere in its youth, as you would expect from grapes grown in Serralunga, but it is balanced by a broad expanse of very ripe fruit, supported by minerality which builds on the palate. The wine becomes more fleshy in texture, in the glass. This represents a seamless performance by Gaja, layered and intense and showing a degree of real complexity. A masterpiece of understatement where all the components form a harmonious a tour de force. Will be absolutely outstanding.
