2005 Lacoste-Borie, Pauillac

2005 Lacoste-Borie, Pauillac

The team at Grand-Puy-Lacoste produced an outstanding 'grand vin' in 2005 and Lacoste-Borie, the estate's second wine, has been produced to similarly exacting standards. A Cabernet/Merlot blend that is made from young vine fruit and from 'declassified' vats of Grand-Puy-Lacoste. Bordeaux of good value from one of Lay & Wheeler's favourite properties.

2000 Château Pibran, Cru Bourgeois Pauillac

2000 Château Pibran, Cru Bourgeois Pauillac

Currently on offer: Classic Bordeaux for drinking now

The colour here is showing early maturity, and there is a lovely mature bouquet, of meaty and rusty fruit. This is very typically Pauillac. It has a lovely style on the palate too, although soft and rounded. There is still some evident tannins although it is approachable now.

2007 Château d'Armailhac, Cru Classé Pauillac

2007 Château d'Armailhac, Cru Classé Pauillac

Currently on offer: Classic Bordeaux for drinking now

The 2007 d’Armailhac captures sweet, ripe blackcurrant fruit with pleasing freshness on both nose and palate. There is almost a minty note of freshness too. With its cool, ripe fruit, flowing style, and touchs of layered depth, this is fresh, pure and soft, yet impeccably balanced. Not overly complex, but certainly rewarding.

2006 Château Pibran, Cru Bourgeois Pauillac

2006 Château Pibran, Cru Bourgeois Pauillac

An exemplary cru bourgeois Pauillac that is produced by the wine making team at Pichon Longueville (Baron) led by Christian Seely and the talented technical director Jean-René Matignon. A 70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon cuvée that displays juicy, cassis inspired scents and flavours. We admire the freshness and purity of this wine which, as Jean-René explained, benefits from a gentle approach in vinification that avoids over-extraction. However Pibran is not without substance and the harmony of the 2006 is impressive.

2004 Château Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac

2004 Château Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac

True to form, Batailley has produced (potentially) one of the best value-for-money wines of the 2004 vintage – subject to the price being as reasonable as always. The Castéja family’s aim throughout its numerous estates is to produce characterful wines at sensible prices. Batailley and Trottevieille are particularly successful in 2004. 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot plus a smattering of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc make up the Batailley blend this year. A pauillac that shows freshness, richness and volume. Scents and flavours are an amalgam of red and black summer fruits.

2004 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Cru Classé Pauillac

2004 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Cru Classé Pauillac

Grand-Puy has proved itself to be worthy of higher status than its cinquième cru classification. Not here heavy extraction nor over-manipulation but refinement, finesse and complexity, yet with structure to ensure longevity. The 2004 vintage is marked by its bright, profound cassis scents and seams of concentrated spicy, black-fruit flavours. Beautifully balanced and stylish.

2003 Château Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac

2003 Château Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac

An absolutely tremendous wine in 2003, and for several vintages a favourite of ours on grounds of price to quality. Batailley stands alongside the very best of the vintage. This is outstanding with bright cassis aromas, sweet, almost silky textured fruit and all-important freshness. Very, very good indeed. It is likely that few 2003 bordeaux will offer such splendid value as this fresh, well-built pauillac.

2002 Château Haut-Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac

2002 Château Haut-Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac

Haut-Batailley has become remarkably dependable and highly attractive in recent vintages. Sweet expressive aromas of dark red fruits, very Cabernet- with a capsicum touch to punchy blackcurrant notes. Quite a sleek example, with a pleasing sense of fleshy fruit in a relatively supple frame. This is sure to reward mid-term cellarage- an attractive quintessential Pauillac.
