2006 Château Amelisse, St.Emilion Grand Cru

This is a delightfully enticing wine, with hedgerow and brambly red fruit on the nose. Incredibly balanced, with a lovely sense of concentration and silky, integrated tannins. Ripe, succulent plum and pure morello cherry fruit to the fore, but there is also a graphite-like minerality that comes through on the finish. Superb value for money.

2006 Louis Semillon, Henschke, Eden Valley

Positively blossoms in the glass on exposure to air. The perfume here is tropical with hints of ripe green apple. A change in character from vintages of the 1990s is the more fruit-driven nature with less oak influence than their predecessors. 2006 Louis is a wine with a broad array of vanilla-enhanced fruit. A Semillon with a gorgeous, seductive texture and a long, elegant finish. Most definitely a wine with ageing potential.

2006 Chateau Haut-Pezat, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

A vintage classified as Grand Cru at this chateau, indeed 2006 was a success in much of the Bordeaux region. Haut-Pézat is diligently run by the Arnaud family, father and son, who cultivate largely Merlot with a little Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc for balance. What immediately strikes is the fabulous depth of colour, signalling intensity and concentration. The bouquet is restrained but stirring, with wonderful aromas of cherry, plum and spice trying to find their way up and out. The palate confirms the concentration and weight. But this is a balanced wine, displaying silky tannins and a long, fine finish.

2005 Château Côte de Baleau, Grand Cru St-Emilion

Made by the same family as Clos Saint-Martin and Château Grandes Murailles. This is a benchmark St-Emilion, with rich, red fruit characters and hints of spice on the nose. On the palate, the fruit has a slightly darker nature, with a hint of coffee on the finish.

2000 Château Faizeau Vieilles Vignes, Montagne-St-Emilion

Juicy, succulent, deeply-coloured montagne-st-émilion produced from ancient Merlot vines. There is a lot to admire in this ample, voluptuous wine. Sweet ripe fruit has a layered, velvety quality. Not for first time Faizeau has produced one of the outstanding satellite wines.

2005 Château Suduiraut, Cru Classé Sauternes

One of the most exotic and rich wines of the vintage - no surprise for Suduiraut. The harvest commenced on the 26th September and concluded 13th November during which time there were four passages (pickings). Luscious with intense botrytis aroma and flavour. Complex and flamboyant.

2004 Château Berliquet, Grand Cru Classé St-Emilion

A return to form for an old favourite. Fresh, scented, creamy fruit on the nose and a soft open palate of lush berry and plum fruit. A mid-weight wine with good intensity. Nothing harsh here, just well-focused, pure stone-fruit flavours and a gentle, vanillin edge from new oak barrels. Smooth and sensuous with delicious ripeness and harmony. A lovely st-émilion with plenty of charm.

2000 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion Blanc, Pessac-Léognan

Mid-golden appearance with some greenish tints, the nose reveals elements of ripe peach, citrus and sweet vanillin from new oak. The palate shows good breadth with some restraint, Semillon is clearly dominant here. Some viscosity in terms of mouth feel with a well-balanced acidity, this will drink well after a couple of years' patient cellarage.
