2002 Château Latour, 1er Cru Pauillac

Magnum2002 Château Latour, 1er Cru Pauillac

Deep intense purple colour, with a striking aroma of violets. On the palate this is a very rounded wine, with intense power and structure, supported by robust tannins and a finish characterised by fleshy Cabernet fruit flavours. An excellent example of Château Latour. 12- 25

2004 Château La Mission Haut-Brion, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

2004 Château La Mission Haut-Brion, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

Jean-Philippe Delmas explained that 69% of production at La Mission made the grade to the grand vin in 2004 compared to 60% in 2003. Super-rich, spicy fruit on the nose and with a wealth of succulent, black fruit flavours. Pessac-léognan’s classic mineralité courses through its veins. Very inviting and made in the natural, unforced style. Dry but ripe, this is fine bordeaux from a famous property that is under the same ownership as its neighbour Haut-Brion. An assemblage of 55% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc.

2005 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

2005 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

The fragrance of Chevalier is of ripe summer fruits with gentle creamy nuances. The palate is poised and suave with a finely-expressed, freshly crushed berry character allied to minerality. Tannins are silky yet firm and the textural expression most impressive. Absolutely lovely and surely the finest Chevalier for many years.

2005 Château Léoville-Poyferré, Cru Classé St-Julien

2005 Château Léoville-Poyferré, Cru Classé St-Julien

The palate oozes the purest of fruit flavours, a palate that is both vibrant and sensuous yet underneath the ripeness, tannins provide impressive support. Poyferré's benchmarks are elegance, texture and sophistication and these characteristics are so impressively expressed in the '05. A beautiful and natural saint-julien that reveals seduction and clarity of flavour.

2005 Château Pontet-Canet, Cru Classé Pauillac

2005 Château Pontet-Canet, Cru Classé Pauillac

Rich and dense on the nose, the aromas here suggest a flamboyant
ripeness and a rich, punchy berry-laden palate to follow. The palate does
not disappoint – rich, concentrated – this makes a bold statement
though finely-balanced. There is a pleasing freshness to the fruit, which
shows Cabernet clearly in the ascendancy with creamy coated, sweet
cassis and blackberry, with notes of smoky mocha and vanillia too. A
firm yet fine tannic grip holds this volume in check, it is however an
undeniably big and chewy wine. This is certainly assured of a bright
future. Some may argue that this is the style of high scores, but no taster
could deny that this is a very serious effort in terms of both stature and
quality. Indeed the quality gained is surely ample reward for the efforts
of Monsieur Tesseron’s team at the resurgent Pontet-Canet.

2006 Château Margaux, 1er Cru Margaux

2006 Château Margaux, 1er Cru Margaux

Only 36% of the total crop from the property went into the grand vin, proof that selection was key this vintage. The blend only includes 4% Merlot, the lowest proportion ever, equalling the percentage of Petit Verdot in this vintage. The resulting blend has a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. A deep, rich inky purple in the glass, the nose is refined with a brooding cassis fruit character. On the palate, the tannins are dense but fine, creating a sensation of depth and volume and a smooth texture in the mouth. The fruit character is darkly mineral, with cassis, black cherry and graphite to the fore. Balance is the key to the success of this wine, with minerality providing the counterpoint to deep dark fruit characters, and fresh acidity preventing the tannins from seeming dominant. A stellar effort from Margaux.

2006 Château Mouton-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac

2006 Château Mouton-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac

There seems to have been a marked change in style at Mouton, whether it is just attributable to this vintage or represents a sea-change in winemaking remains to be seen. Either way, the wine is far less obvious and ostentatious than recent years, and is all the better for it. Inky, intense and opaque in the glass, the nose reveals terrifically pure, scented cassis-like fruit and a touch of warm toast. There is a wealth of black fruit on the palate too which is seamless, glossy and finely tuned. The tannins are assertive, yet well knit and a distinctive, mineral character emerges to the finish. There is richness here, but the wine shows fine restraint. Dark, damson-like fruit and finely expressed mochalike notes persist on the finish. A sublime effort.

2006 Château Ausone, 1er Grand Cru Classé (A) St-Emilion

2006 Château Ausone, 1er Grand Cru Classé (A) St-Emilion

One can’t help but be impressed by Château Ausone, set at the top of a tortuously twisted road, with its caves and chapelle dug into the limestone cliff. It is a fittingly romantic location for one of the world’s greatest wines. A blend of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot, this is dark and brooding in the glass. The nose is exceedingly rich and dense, with attractive black cherry and bramble fruit characters. The tannins are firm and structured, yet ripe and well integrated with the rich core of dark cherry, cassis and damson fruit. A stony minerality and a dart of refreshing acidity reflect the terroir and lend backbone to the rich succulent fruit. The balance of this wine is so finely honed that even though it has many years ahead of it, you feel like you could almost approach it now! 2014 to 2025.

2006 Les Forts de Latour, Pauillac

2006 Les Forts de Latour, Pauillac

Deep in the glass, with ripe currant and dark berry aromas. A layered, natural style on the palate, effortless and round, with a bright acidity. There is a sense of fine precision here, and a distinct minerality. Very textural with a fine ripeness to the expansive berry fruit. Mid-weight, pure and refined, Les Forts lacks the muscle or structure of the grand vin, but works so well, with its harmony and striking purity. Long and poised.
