Appealing and fresh, this has wild strawberry and sweet raspberry fruit on the nose, as well as toasted oak characters of vanilla and coconut. Rich in the mouth, but with a enlivening acidity, this would be perfect with mixed charcuterie, cheeses and seasonal roasted meats.
Inky in the glass, the palate is awash with blackberry, blueberry, spice and vanilla nuances and this wine is sure to evolve even more complex aromas. Tannins are currently firm, but we expect they will soften and notes of graphite and cocoa will develop. Full bodied with a long finish, this is a wine with a great future.
Fruit for Imperial Reserva and Imperial Gran Reserva are obtained entirely from CVNE vineyards at Vilalba, in the Rioja Alta region. At almost 600 meters these are amongst the highest vineyards in Rioja. The Microclimate delivers high definition fruit and clear structure, perhaps the most claret-like in style found here. The Reserva benefits from hand-picking and table selection of bunches prior to fermentation, clear quality indicators. The wine is made from 95% Tempranillo and is barrel-matured for 20 months in French and American oak.
2004 was an outstanding vintage in Rioja, and the most appealing aspect of 2004 Reservas are the fact that they are released ready to drink, but can age very gracefully indeed. Bodegas Campillo age their Reservas for no less than 20 months in American oak, which gives the wines very rich and seductive flavours of vanilla and coconut to complement the dried plums Tempranillo fruit.
What a find! In the 1960s, this was one of the most prestigious estates in Rioja. Situated in Haro next to Muga and C.V.N.E.,they hold some fantastic vineyards. Currently relatively unknown, they are a slumbering giant. 1964 is the vintage for Rioja; I have tasted various wines from different estates and classifications and they all have the same sweet fruit, vibrancy and youthfulness. Retasted later that evening, it remained fresh and had gained a layer or two!
A 'high expression' wine from Murua, the issue of old, low-yielding vines. Veguin is gloriously deep and confident with a deep meaty countenance. Certainly fruit- rather than tannin- or oak-driven, this is a splendid example of the genre.
This cuvée shows a dark, dense fruit character with its origin in the warm Viña del Olivo vineyard. Richness comes through on the palate, which has the high quality, 100% new oak beautifully fused with the ripe but fresh fruit. Glorious texture through the mid palate makes for a very complete wine. Long, harmonious, balanced and complex, this will develop into something sublime.
