This 100% Sangiovese from acclaimed producer il Borghetto has been aged for 30 months in French
oak barrels. While the purity and grace that is characteristic of il Borghetto is still to the fore, this lengthy ageing process has given the wine a spicy toasted note that balances beautifully with its rich, dense, dark fruit character.
Deep ruby and almost opaque in the glass. The nose is opulent, offering-up tobacco, cherry and spice in a rich mixture. The palate is full and forceful and, whilst elegant, is atypical for Rufina in its power and depth. This is a striking wine with good acidity, excellent length and finessed tannins. The fleshy texture is backed-up by beautiful balance and good structure.A fine bottle of rufina riserva which will certainly repay keeping. Outstanding.
95% Sangiovese and 5% Mammolo, this single vineyard wine is Volpaia’s flagship. Pretty on the nose, with notes of the violets after which the mammolo variety is named, alongside red berries and woodsmoke. The palate is complex and layered, with mineral notes melding with bright vibrant berry fruit and soft oak characters. Supremely balanced and attractively pure, this is a moreish glass of wine even at this young stage.
Made from fruit from a single vineyard and comprising 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is an appealing wine on the nose, with notes of dark cherries, coffee beans and hedgerow fruit. The palate is silky-textured, with layers of ripe tannins supporting dark fruit and an almost-garrigue-like savoury herbaceous note. Long and fresh on the finish, this is an absolutely delicious Chianti.
Made from 100% Sangiovese, this has ripe, black cherry notes on the nose and hints of mocha and spice. The palate is rounded, with sweet-ripe fruit to the fore, framed by surprisingly dense, soft tannins. Very rich, very dark and very smooth, but with a mouth-watering and appealing freshness that adds lift and brightness to the finish. Very good indeed.
This small family-run estate in the Gaiole region of Chianti Classico has received huge investment in both vineyard and winery since the early 1990s, the results of which are now apparent in its wines. This Riserva comes from a six hectare plot in an area called Ceppeto. Round, rich and powerful with great texture, this has a typically savoury edge with hints of underbrush characters to counterbalance the plum and spice. A dense style of Chianti which has bigger bones than most.
