2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

This has a highly perfumed nose of lavender, raspberry and red cherry. The palate is primary and intense, with notes of herbs and black fruit. It is the balance of fruit, structure and the fine-grained, polished nature of the tannins that is so impressive at this stage. The finish is very long and refreshing. Marc Perrin raved about his Grenache, which - along with Mourvèdre - was the star of the vintage.

2011 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

2011 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

Very bright and open, this lovely wine is redolent of blue fruits scented with pretty violets, spice and rose petals. The palate shows excellent concentration and depth with an attractive fleshy character and a long finish. The firmtannins and powerful blueberry, cherry and blackberry fruit marry well with the pure vein of acidity that runs throughout. This is a very impressive wine from one of the most skilful winemakers in the Rhône.
Wine currently held in transit or abroad, estimated arrival in the UK October 2013. (Find out more about En Primeur)

2010 Roussanne Vieilles Vignes, Château de Beaucastel

2010 Roussanne Vieilles Vignes, Château de Beaucastel

Produced from 101 year old vines, this is a voluptuous, magnificent wine whose creamy and fresh aromatics are delicately balanced with toasty oak nuances and crisp, stony minerality. Peach, quince and citrus blend with honey, beeswax and ginger to create a stunningly refined wine with fabulous weight and a spicy finish. Arguably the best white wine in the Southern Rhone, this will only improve with age. And it’s hard to improve on perfection.

2011 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, Château de Beaucastel

2011 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, Château de Beaucastel

Scented, with concentrated notes of pear and peach, this wine opens up to reveal more complex aromas of spice, kernel, nut and apricot. Rich and textural on the palate, floral characters are beautifully balanced by a savoury nut-oil quality and touch of spice. Fresh and very long, with a creamy minerality that carries through to the finish.

2011 Roussanne Vieilles Vignes, Château de Beaucastel

2011 Roussanne Vieilles Vignes, Château de Beaucastel

This top cuvée never fails to impress and in 2011 the aromatics are simply extraordinary. Fine, fresh apricot and vanilla cream are harmoniously balanced by notes of white blossom and crushed rock minerals. The palate is full and rich with ripe stone fruits, but lifted by a bright backbone of acidity. This is a multifaceted wine, where peach and pear vie for attention alongside quince and a hint of honeyed beeswax, all of which carry through to the finish in resplendent fashion. Graceful, elegant and vividly focussed, this will surely go the distance.

2008 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

2008 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

Deep in hue, the aromas here suggest damson and black cherry, with notes of garrigue. On the palate, the wine reveals a lovely character of sweet black fruit and a touch of black olive tapenade. There is ample intensity here, as well as fine proportions, with a freshening note of acidity. The finish reveals a lively spice, with lightly gripping tannins well-veiled throughout. A very fine Beaucastel with the Mourvèdre assuming centre stage. Long and persistent, it will be interesting to revisit when the final blend is made to see if the Grenache component asserts itself – nonetheless this is an impressive mid-term Beaucastel.

1995 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

1995 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

This has a good depth of colour, quite dense. On the nose it seems rather hot and smoky, with burnt cherry fruit, with a sweet, liquorice edge. A lovely texture on he palate, firm and structured, precise and grippy. Rather svelte, with sweet cherry notes, and little in the way of depth or complexity. Rounded, concentrated, lots of potential here.
