2007 Château Latour, 1er Cru Pauillac

2007 Château Latour, 1er Cru Pauillac

The decision to incorporate a higher than normal proportion of press wine has given definition and valuable backbone to the 2007 Latour. Opaque in the glass, with restrained toasty, berry fruit and notes of cedar on the nose. The palate is quite open with a pure, attractive, fleshy accent. There is a sense of energy here, despite the forward nature and curranty dark fruits meld with a distinctive wet stone, gravely character. The tannins are soft and light yet lend enough drive to give direction. There is a fresh, vibrant accent throughout which adds to the attraction. Long and refined, there is less of the authoritative style that one would expect from more classic years, yet this is impressively refined in this context.

2007 Château Haut-Brion, 1er Cru Pessac-Léognan

2007 Château Haut-Brion, 1er Cru Pessac-Léognan

Equally as dark in hue as the La Mission, the aromas here are restrained, hinting at fresh dark fruits. Fleshy and gently mouth-filling fruit leads to a lush, vibrant impression with lively acidity and a creamy texture to the finish. Not an imposing Haut-Brion, but there is a modicum more substance here than with many. There is gravelly minerality here alongside well-struck poise and the purity that one has come to expect of this great estate.

2007 Château Margaux, 1er Cru Margaux

2007 Château Margaux, 1er Cru Margaux

With only 32% of the crop used for the Grand Vin this was the most severe selection ever at Margaux. All the various plots of the vineyard were used in the assemblage of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot and just 2% Cabernet Franc. The colour is deep and vivid and the nose offers dark fruits, cassis and a touch of liquorice. The fresh, medium-bodied palate displays good intensity and the tannins are integrated and finely tuned. The Margaux elegance and finesse shines through in this testament to the rigour of the selection. Outstanding medium term drinking.

2007 Château Palmer, Cru Classé Margaux

2007 Château Palmer, Cru Classé Margaux

The undoubted success of Palmer in 2007 is solely due to the diligence and hard work in both the vineyards and cellar. The vines were painstakingly leaf thinned around the clusters in June to maximise both the sunshine and aeration. The deep colour in the glass leads to a nose of blackberry and currant allied to a touch of vanilla from the oak. Château Palmer is famed for its restraint and in 2007 the tannins are very refined although they do add some structure. Finishes on a savoury note and definitely one of the vintage’s successes.

2007 Château Montrose, Cru Classé St-Estèphe

2007 Château Montrose, Cru Classé St-Estèphe

Montrose tends to be a wine requiring decades to fully mature, but the softer 2007 vintage has produced a wine which will be accessible in just a few years. Despite the earlier drinking nature, the wine produced is outstanding. The higher blend of cabernet sauvignon adds power and concentration to the ripe merlot fruit. The remainder of the blend is cabernet franc with just 1% of petit verdot to complete. There is a touch of spice and smoke with the ripe berry fruit, and the wine is full bodied with a firm structure and fresh acidity. This is an opportunity to purchase a legendary wine which can be drunk and enjoyed in a mere couple of years.

2007 Château Cheval-Blanc, 1er Grand Cru Classé (A) St-Emilion

2007 Château Cheval-Blanc, 1er Grand Cru Classé (A) St-Emilion

Medium deep in colour with a bright, purple-red core. This has lovely perfumed, ripe Morello cherry, loganberry and raspberry fruit on the nose and is piercing and pippy with such freshness. Some cool but ripe plum notes and great elegance on the attractive, natural palate. Flowing, balanced and poised with medium acidity and vibrant fresh fruit. The tannins are incredibly fine.

2007 Château Haut-Bailly, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

2007 Château Haut-Bailly, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

One of the few wines to stand out in the line-up of reds from Pessac-Léognan.The aromas are fresh and offer scents of ripe berry and plums. The palate reveals a pleasing texture, not forced but more natural and understated. A classically structured wine, this is not without grip with succulent fruit throughout and a pleasing gravelly persistence. Fresh and pure, Haut-Bailly’s refinement is evident in any vintage.

2007 Les Forts de Latour, Pauillac

2007 Les Forts de Latour, Pauillac

Restrained aromatically, with a suggestion of scented berry fruits, this shows an appealing red berry fruit character infused with notes of cedar. Mouthfilling and broad with fine-grained tannins, this reveals classic stony, gravely, mineral notes. As with the entire stable of wines at Latour, their intelligent approach to viticulture and winemaking has paid handsome dividends in the context of the 2007 vintage.
