2007 Rubicon, Meerlust, Stellenbosch

2007 Rubicon, Meerlust, Stellenbosch

A classic of South African fine wines, the Rubicon from Meerlust almost needs no introduction. A Bordeaux blend made from low-yielding fruit, this is a powerful wine that has the ability to age for many years. On the nose, this has notes of dark Cabernet-cassis fruit, store-cupboard spice and a hint of wood smoke. These characters are reflected on the palate, where they are framed by ripe-but-robust tannins. The fruit character has a new world ripeness and concentration, but the structure and freshness give this wine a real sense of old-world classicism.

2010 Chardonnay, Cape Chamonix, Franschhoek

2010 Chardonnay, Cape Chamonix, Franschhoek

From fruit grown on the comparatively cool upper-slopes of the Franschhoek valley, the Chamonix wines are made in a classical vein, with more than a nod to Burgundian production values. The estate Chardonnay has notes of preserved lemon, subtle apricot and some toasty oak characters. The palate is rather reserved, with soft white stone fruit balanced by savoury buttered toast and a fine smoky minerality.

2010 Syrah, Creation Wines, Walker Bay

2010 Syrah, Creation Wines, Walker Bay

A relative newcomer to the South African wine scene, Creation Wines was founded in 2002 by Swiss winemaker Jean-Claude Martin. The estate lies 350m above sea-level in the Hemel-en-Aarde region around Walker Bay and it is this altitude that is crucial to the success of their critically-acclaimed Syrah (the 2009 was given a score of 93 by Neal Martin in the Wine Advocate), allowing it to reach ripeness without losing freshness. Dark blueberry and black cherry fruit is evident on the nose here, with hints of a Northern-Rhône black pepper character. The palate is voluptuously ripe, with fine tannins enswathing rich dark fruit, yet this finishes on a refreshingly crisp note.

"The 2010 Syrah has a very attractive floral bouquet with hints of black truffle and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe fleshy tannins, layers of ripe blackberry, wild strawberry, orange zest and honey. It has great density and length, yet retains elegance and purity. This is very well crafted. 92 points" - Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate #204

2011 'Kika' Late Harvest Chenin Blanc, Miles Mossop, Stellenbosch

Half2011 'Kika' Late Harvest Chenin Blanc, Miles Mossop, Stellenbosch

100% Chenin Blanc, from fruit affected by botrytis (noble rot) and harvested late to achieve maximum character, sweetness and intensity. This is a delicious and appealing dessert wine. The nose is perfumed, with notes of honeyed citrus, apricot and an almost-ginger spice. The palate is concentrated and sweet, without being cloying, the natural acidity of the Chenin Blanc giving it a sense of balance and freshness. Long and pure on the finish, with notes of citrus and pine resin. A charming and appealing dessert wine.
