2008 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Cuvée Réservée, Domaine du Pégau

2008 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Cuvée Réservée, Domaine du Pégau

A classic Pégau style, with soft-skinned hedgerow fruits melding with smoky, savoury notes on the nose. More streamlined than opulent on the palate, this is not a heady Grenache-led wine, but more restrained. Cool, focused and linear in style, there is lovely fruit, terrific elegance and vibrancy. The Pégau hallmarks of leather and liquorice are discernible on the finish. It is easy to see why winemaker Laurence Féraud is proud of her 2008s; this is long, elegant and reminiscent of the 2004.

2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

Dark in the glass, this has notes of brambly fruit alongside leather and smoke on the nose. On the palate, the fruit is more forward, with notes of cherry and loganbery. The tannins are soft and fine and there is an underlying freshness, which gives this wine a real lift and sense of class.

2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château Maucoil

“The dark ruby-colored 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits a sweet bouquet of jammy black cherries, balsam wood, pepper, and dried herbs. It is a charming, medium-bodied 2001 displaying excellent purity, ripe fruit, and no hard edges.” Robert Parker – Wine Advocate.

2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Tradition, Pierre Usseglio

2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Tradition, Pierre Usseglio

A refined, polished style, as is to be expected from this Domaine. The nose reveals notes of scented red cherry, garrigue and lavender. Texturally exquisite. Round and glossy with damson fruit, liquorice and peppery spices to the fore. This is not a heady Châteauneuf, but fresh, poised and welcoming, revealing sweet, round, fine-grained tannins, the hallmarks of 2006.

2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Pure, Domaine La Barroche

2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Pure, Domaine La Barroche

Perfumed warm berry fruit on the nose with a touch of garrigue. The palate is soft and expansive with wild strawberry and darker summer fruits too as well as notes of licorice and kirsch. Beautifully textured, so opulent and supple yet vibrant and fresh. This reveals exemplary harmony and balance. The tannins are ripe and powerful yet perfectly integrated into the wine. It refuses to fade on the finish, a remarkably fine Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
