2000 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe

2000 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe

Grenache was the star of the 2000 vintage, creating a velvety Vieux-Télégraphe. Terrific warmth and ripeness on the nose evokes thoughts of languid summer days lying out in the hot sun. This leads on to a display of red and black fruits, spice, leather and warm earth on the palate. The impressive finish has soft tannins and reveals an underlying structure hidden by the hedonistic, mouthfilling mid-palate. There is easily another 10 years lifespan to this wine, but the freshness and ripe tannin make it one that will give tremendous satisfaction in its youth.

2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe

2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe

Never the most youthful looking in the glass, 2001 Vieux Télégraphe shows more brick-red than vibrant purple. Provencal herbs and ultra-ripe, sweet spicy fruit make for heady aromas. The palate shows density and power, though not at the loss of refinement. This is bold and full, with layer upon layer of finely expressed berry fruit. Liquorice-like qualities as well as garrigue notes add to its appeal and a long, driven finish signals what we believe to be the finest vintage of this wine since the exceptional 1990, and yes, that means surpassing the magnificent 1998. High praise indeed, but more than well-deserved.

2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine la Roquette

2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine la Roquette

Deep, intense purple-red, the aromas here exude bold berry fruit, spice and garrigue-like herbs. The palate is rich and layered; an expansive châteauneuf that is not shy of volume, yet despite its evident weight and depth avoids being overtly heady. The lush Grenache-dominant fruit, with freshness and succulence, comes through remarkably well, almost encouraging youthful consumption. Perfectly-balanced and a very fine example from this Brunier-owned property of growing repute.

2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée, Domaine du Pégau

2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée, Domaine du Pégau

One glance at the glass reveals the depth, ripeness and intensity of the Réservée
bottling. The bouquet is gloriously full and rich, offering fruit and spice in abundance
like the best Christmas cake. Notes of liquorice add appeal as does a discreet peppery
complexity. The palate seems both sweet and dry, with a cigar and brandy-like finish.
Superb.

2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée, Domaine du Pégau

2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée, Domaine du Pégau

Deep in hue, youthful crimson to rim. The nose reveals characters of roasted meat and dusky dark fruits. Firm tannins underpin expansive ripe, sweet blackberry fruit. Notes of provençal herbs, liquorice and discreet pepper are all discernible here in a wine of fine substance. Tightly wound, and certain to last, this is an impressive example, bold in nature, with purity and elegance and freshness that alludes to the outstanding 2001.

2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, La Combe des Fous, Clos St. Jean

2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, La Combe des Fous, Clos St. Jean

Perfumed on the nose, with notes of blueberry and cherry. The palate is full-bodied, with dense, but fine, tannins. Rich, dark berry fruits are to the fore, with a subtle spice and a touch of minerality. Long on the finish. Very fine Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Clos des Papes

2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Clos des Papes

Deep, near opaque with a bright purple rim. The nose is rich in dark cherry fruit, with spicy, peppery nuances. The palate shows terrific purity, with an appealing sense of ripeness. The fruit is bold and intense and the palate weighty, but there is remarkable elegance and refinement present. A seamless quality on the palate impresses further, as do fine, gently grippy tannins. Spice, pepper, liquorice and a hint of Provençal herbs serve to add complexity in what looks sure to be a stunning Châteauneuf-du-Pape

2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Daniel Stehelin

2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Daniel Stehelin

Offers aromatics of striking dark fruits, with a fragant blueberry note. Assertive on the palate, it is both layered and intense with flavours of spicy, dark fruit compote and provençal herbs. This is full-throttle but is by no means overblown and shows fine acidity throughout. A rich style that shows a sense of balance and good potential.

2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Etienne Gonnet, Domaine Font de Michelle

2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Etienne Gonnet, Domaine Font de Michelle

Deep in the glass with wild forest fruits on the nose. Black cherries, liquorice and a touch of dark chocolate on the palate is balanced with a pleasing freshness and acidity. Already there is a sense of development of the flavours and further ageing will see herbaceous and gamey notes appear. The tannins are silky and finely grained and there is a dense body too, with a finish that is structured and stylish.
