2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Etienne Gonnet, Domaine Font de Michelle

2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Etienne Gonnet, Domaine Font de Michelle

Deep in the glass with wild forest fruits on the nose. Black cherries, liquorice and a touch of dark chocolate on the palate is balanced with a pleasing freshness and acidity. Already there is a sense of development of the flavours and further ageing will see herbaceous and gamey notes appear. The tannins are silky and finely grained and there is a dense body too, with a finish that is structured and stylish.

2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Clos des Papes

2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Clos des Papes

Deep in hue, nearing opaque, the nose boasts a terrific compote of ripe, black fruits, dark cherry and sweet raspberry as well as garrigue and spice scents. A very finely balanced, yet powerful châteauneuf, which seems to amply reveal the style of the vintage. This is exceptional, with such gentle persistence and pleasing notes of spicy complexity. Very ripe fruit, and nothing leaden-footed here. One cannot foresee this ever showing in anything other than a harmonious manner.

2006 Gigondas Préstige des Hautes Garrigues, Domaine Santa Duc

2006 Gigondas Préstige des Hautes Garrigues, Domaine Santa Duc

The flagship cuvée at Santa Duc and only produced in exceptional years, this is largely old-vine Grenache with some Syrah and a little Cinsault and Mourvèdre. The nose exudes freshly crushed, wonderful ripe dark fruits as well as notes of provençal herbs. On the palate, this is generous, rich and brooding, a well-extracted wine with sweet, enticing ripeness. Structured with grippy, yet round tannins, this deep-laden gigondas possesses a striking stony minerality. Admirably concentrated and built to last, this is regularly one of the over-achievers of the Southern Rhône and we are delighted to be featuring it for the first time.

2006 L'Accent de la Roquète, Brunier

2006 L'Accent de la Roquète, Brunier

A recent addition to the Brunier portfolio, this special selection of just 4,000 bottles comprises 90% old vine
Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre. The vine-age delivers terrific concentration allied to the same familial elegance that is found with La Roquète itself. The sandy soils of the vineyard deliver markedly fragrant aromatics. There is a lush, layered fruit on the palate, all dusky raspberry, garrigue and spice. A sweet sense of ripeness is evident here, again making for an instantly appealing cuvée, though there is more to this wine, more backbone and finer length. Perhaps the best l’Accent yet.

2006 Côte-Rôtie Cuvée Classique, René Rostaing

2006 Côte-Rôtie Cuvée Classique, René Rostaing

This wine is a blend from various small parcels under René’s ownership. The fresh aromas suggest ripe dusky fruits, underscored with savoury, meaty characters. On the palate there is ample, sweet hedgerow fruit, with peppery spicy depth and complex notes of leather and game. The freshness and sleek tannins carry the wine well into a long mineral finish.

2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de Cristia

2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de Cristia

The 2006 vintage is elegant and impressive. There’s good substance here with vivid raspberry and lightly spiced red fruits. There is a touch of liquorice evident, as well as deep-knit spice in this stylish châteauneuf. What impresses most about this style is that it fits so well into the Cristia style, textured and elegant with silky round tannins. What more could you ask for?

2006 Rasteau, Gourt de Mautens

2006 Rasteau, Gourt de Mautens

Jerome Bressy took the reins at Domaine Gourt de Mautens in 1996 and has done much to improve quality ever since. Yields here are incredibly low and the wine is a product of remarkable attention to detail. Striking, pure aromas of sweet, scented damson and succulent dark cherry are confirmed on the gentle, velvety palate. Notes of spice, liquorice and pepper are also in evidence with a stony mineral nature to the finish. A remarkably fine-textured Rasteau.

2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Bois de Boursan

2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Bois de Boursan

New to Lay & Wheeler
An impressive domaine, that is run by Jean-Paul Versino, the third generation of this Piemontese family to make wine in Châteauneuf. The ‘Tradition’ is a wine of great character. Deep and intense in the glass with a purplish hue. The aromas are striking, offering characters of freshly crushed, sweet, ripe hedgerow fruits. There is such a fine sense of poise here with gently mouthfilling macerated cherry fruit, allied to complex notes of pepper, spice and garrigue, with a smoky, meaty overtone. Very complete and impressive, outstanding for the estate’s normal cuvée.

2006 Vacqueyras, Azalais, Domaine le Sang des Cailloux

2006 Vacqueyras, Azalais, Domaine le Sang des Cailloux

This wine is named after one of Serge Férigoule's daughters and is composed of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah with Mourvedre and Cinsault completing the blend. The palate shows an elegant fusion of chocolate, spice and black pepper. The underlying freshness of the vintage is there in the backdrop of acidity, fruit and soft, round tannins. This is a wine with real potential

2006 La Bolida, Costières de Nîmes, Château d'Or et de Gueules

2006 La Bolida, Costières de Nîmes, Château d'Or et de Gueules

A hugely impressive and highly unusual cuvée comprising 100% Mourvèdre from 100-year-old pre-phylloxera vines. Packed with dark, dusky fruits, smoky blackberry and scented blueberry allied to Provençal herbs and with savoury nuances. What impresses most is the balance and the fine grip exerted by round, silken tannins. This is a brooding wine that shares little in common with other Costières.
