2010 Château Gruaud-Larose, Cru Classé St-Julien

2010 Château Gruaud-Larose, Cru Classé St-Julien

The slightly lighter shade of purple that the 2010 Gruaud-Larose displays announces its style quite appropriately - the pretty, understated floral nose is followed on the palate by beautifully fresh and juicy blackcurrants, with a hint of parma violets and a fresh, long finish. To use a perhaps old-fashoned wine tasting term, this is a very feminine style of claret, all about silky elegance and finesse. Delightful.

2010 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Cru Classé St-Julien

2010 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Cru Classé St-Julien

"With loads of minerality, a terrific opaque purple color, and slightly more structure and tannin than either Poyferre or St.-Pierre (and that’s saying something), this is a blockbuster, fabulous Ducru Beaucaillou that should be at its best a good decade from now and last 40-50 years. The proprietor is not alone in thinking this is the finest Ducru Beaucaillou since the 1961. The classic wet rock, creme de cassis, subtle oak and gravelly stoniness of the vineyard come through in this spectacular, full-bodied, gorgeously pure and intense effort. This is wine for the ages that should be forgotten for at least a decade.

Proprietor Bruno Borie thinks this wine is as superb as their 2009. Slightly more structured and less flamboyant than its older sibling, it is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot from the very best parcels of the vineyard. This wine tips the scales at 14% natural alcohol but has a normal pH of 3.6, which is one of the characteristics of this vintage (high alcohol, normal pH), which thus accounts for the freshness and precision found in most 2010s." 98+ Points, Robert Parker

2010 Château Léoville-Poyferré, Cru Classé St-Julien

2010 Château Léoville-Poyferré, Cru Classé St-Julien

"The wine out distances both Leoville Las Cases and Leoville Barton, but all three of them are compelling efforts. Full-bodied, dense purple in color, with floral notes intermixed with blackberries, cassis, graphite and spring flowers, this full-bodied, legendary effort is long and opulent, with wonderfully abundant yet sweet tannin, a skyscraper-like mid-palate and a thrilling, nearly one-minute finish. This spectacular effort from Poyferre that should drink well for 30+ years.

Another spectacular wine from the Cuvelier family, Leoville Poyferre (along with Ducru Beaucaillou) may be one of the two best wines of St.-Julien year after year these days. This is a large estate, covering nearly 200 acres, and the final blend of the 2010 Leoville Poyferre is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, a whopping 34% Merlot and the rest 7% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc." 98+ points, Robert Parker

2011 Château Léoville-Poyferré, Cru Classé St-Julien

2011 Château Léoville-Poyferré, Cru Classé St-Julien

Beautifully aromatic, showing gorgeous ripe cassis, violet and coffee notes. The palate is glossy, supple and expansive. Absolutely loaded with rich sweet cassis, with lovely subtle cedar and coffee nuances. The tannin levels are actually higher than last year, but they are so fine, and the fruit so pure, that they are almost imperceivable. Following on from the 2009's perfect Parker score, the 2011 wine continues to show the great strides in quality that Leoville Poyferré have made. Fresh, harmonious, polished and seductive.

2011 Château Léoville-Barton, Cru Classé St-Julien

2011 Château Léoville-Barton, Cru Classé St-Julien

Anthony Barton crafted one of the wines of the vintage this year. Dark and very brooding, with some very pure Cabernet fruit showing through, the nose heralds well the fantastic palate of rich and full-bodied blackberries, graphite and spices. The habitual firm tannic structure is extremely well handled, completing a great effort and creating, once again, an absolutely quintessential claret.

2011 Château Beychevelle, Cru Classé St-Julien

2011 Château Beychevelle, Cru Classé St-Julien

Care for the environment is a very major concern to the vineyard management team of Château Beychevelle, where they believe in producing high quality grapes in an environmentally friendly way. This is deep and brooding with dark fruits and a toasty edge. Quite spicy, with good concentration, black fruits are present, mirroring the aromas on the nose. The tannins are tightly wound, but balanced by a refreshing burst of acidity. Given time we expect this wine to unfold and develop into a stunning St-Julien.

2012 Château Langoa-Barton, Cru Classé St-Julien

2012 Château Langoa-Barton, Cru Classé St-Julien

The 2012 blend contains 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc. The nose is vibrant and ripe and the palate fresh and concentrated, with well-judged acidity. This will mature into a classically-styled Claret once the tannins have resolved and will be very interesting to taste alongside the Léoville as they both mature.

2012 Château Léoville-Barton, Cru Classé St-Julien

2012 Château Léoville-Barton, Cru Classé St-Julien

Léoville-Barton is a truly classic claret and a favourite of ours in most vintages. In this vintage, it has excelled, relishing conditions that have allowed crunchy, dark berry fruit expression to sing. This is quite a serious and masculine Léoville, showing very dense concentrated dark cassis fruit and structural tannins, yet with a delicious freshness that gives this wine a sense of not having been overworked. Pure, expressive, powerful and mineral, this is a vintage success-story as far as we're concerned.

2012 Château Beychevelle, Cru Classé St-Julien

2012 Château Beychevelle, Cru Classé St-Julien

This impressive Fourth Growth is well known for its iconic label depicting a galley ship, and has earned a loyal following in recent years. Cassis, black cherry, forest floor and a lick of menthol dominate the nose. The palate is full and robust, with concentrated, dark fruits and refined tannins. This wine will require some time for its components to meld, but has the core of quality fruit and acidity to age gracefully and mature into a spectacular wine.

2012 Château Branaire-Ducru, Cru Classé St-Julien

2012 Château Branaire-Ducru, Cru Classé St-Julien

Usually a very stylish wine that uses a high proportion of Cabernet-Sauvignon, Branaire-Ducru is the epitome of St-Julien: a combination of Pauillac fruit and structure and Margaux charm! In this vintage, it is fragrant and appealing on the nose, with notes of ripe cassis and smoke. The palate is pure and layered, with a dart of acidity and something a little herbaceous lifting the ripe fruit and dense tannins and giving a clean, fresh finish.
