2010 Château Mouton-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac

2010 Château Mouton-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac

"Only 49% of the production made it into the 2010 Mouton Rothschild, which has a strikingly beautiful label by Jeffrey Koons. This is a truly great wine, with a very high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (94%) and the other 6% Merlot. At 13.9% natural alcohol, Mouton’s director, Philippe Dhalluin, has clearly produced another 50- to 60-year wine that has a chance at perfection in about 15 years time, when I suspect this wine will be rounding into drinking condition. It is dense, rich and full-bodied, with the classic Mouton creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice and floral notes, but also some blueberry and hints of subtle espresso and mulberry. The wine has more minerality and precision than the rich, extravagantly opulent 2009, and while that may please some, others will have their patience tested as they wait and wait for this compelling Mouton Rothschild to hit full maturity. "98+ points, Robert Parker

2010 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Cru Classé Pauillac

2010 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Cru Classé Pauillac

"The 2010 Pichon Lalande is performing extremely well and at the top of the range I predicted several years ago. A final blend dominated much more by Cabernet Sauvignon than usual (66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot), the wine is a tighter, more tannic and structured version of this famed Pauillac, which often tends to have more of a St-Julien-like personality than most Pauillacs. Structured, backward and tannic, yet showing a fat mid-palate that is more savory, broader and more expansive than I remember from barrel, this wine is somewhat reminiscent of the 1986, given the Cabernet Sauvignon domination of the blend. Full-bodied, impressively endowed, and less sexy and velvety than normal, this is a somewhat different style of Pichon Lalande than most readers have been used to. Whether you like it more or less will depend on your point of view, but this wine, unlike most Pichon Lalandes, needs a good 5-7 years of cellaring and should keep for 30+ years. " 95+ points, Robert Parker

2010 Château Haut-Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac

2010 Château Haut-Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac

This wine presents a counterpoint to some of the opaquely structured and tannic wines from the left bank in this vintage. Owned and made by the team responsible for Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Haut-Batailley has a bright, expressive and fluid concentration of fruit. The structure, weight and tannin are presented with a lightness of touch, class and elegance. This is thoughtful and considered winemaking.

2010 Le Petit Mouton, Pauillac

2010 Le Petit Mouton, Pauillac

Picked at optimum ripeness following cool nights in the vineyard, which led to high natural acids and a fresh structure, the palate was immediately perfumed. Almost black in the glass, it nevertheless showed sweet ripe summer fruits and fine, mouthcoating, tannins. A prickly acidity keeps all that structure in place and leads onto a long, rich finish. An excellent performance from this property.

2010 Château Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac

2010 Château Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac

Fruits of the forest warmed by the sun tantalise the nose and this Cabernet Sauvignon character leads through to the palate. This has a lovely texture, with good grip from relatively fine tannins and a mineral note, demonstrating the pure gravel terroir of the vineyard.

2010 Château Clerc Milon, Cru Classé Pauillac

2010 Château Clerc Milon, Cru Classé Pauillac

The wine is a blend this year of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Carmenère, a wider range than at many of its neighbours. At a tasting with its stablemates at Mouton though, the predominant first-impression is a very fine Cabernet character on the nose - austere and clean, with a slight antiseptic quality. A cool mouthfeel leads on to fine tannins and very noticeable, but balanced acidity. This isn't a wine which gives up its charms easily but certainly possesses the tools to develop into something very fine.

2010 Château d'Armailhac, Cru Classé Pauillac

2010 Château d'Armailhac, Cru Classé Pauillac

This year the blend is a mixture of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. We tasted it at Mouton in a flight with its relatives and, like most, it displayed an austere Cabernet character to the fore. This slightly antiseptic quality gives rise to a powerful mid-palate, showing the (desirable) mix of ripe dark fruit, crisp acidity and mouthfilling tannins. This balance is crucial this year and is distinctly different to the opulence of 2009. The jury is still out as to which is superior but both will be long-lived and are at the top of the quality tree.

2010 Réserve de la Comtesse, Pauillac

2010 Réserve de la Comtesse, Pauillac

Tasted alongside the grand vin, the 2010 Reserve de la Comtesse is now a very serious wine in its own right. A wonderfully exotic and expressive nose of cassis, apricot and classic Pauillac notes of pencil lead and cedar. A gorgeous satin-like texture envelopes layers of fruit. Cassis, blackberry and chocolate notes are underpinned by super-fine tannins and refreshing acidity. There is a real swagger about this wine, showing balance, purity and grace, but with a definite wow factor.

2011 Château Lafite-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac

2011 Château Lafite-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac

Christophe Salin, director of Barons de Rothschild has been very forthright about the way in which pricing will work this year, indicating that there should be a substantial cut in price for this wine compared with last year. "With Lafite we have the luxury of being able to sell at a high price, but we want to play by the rules and listen to the market. We don’t want to be individualists – Bordeaux is a collective work; we have power and duties so we need to play as a team." The wine is a very simple blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. 2011 Lafite-Rothschild is a huge, powerful effort that manages levels of concentration rarely equalled in this vintage as well as a velvety, nuanced style and wonderful balance, refined tannins and incredible length. This is a wine that starts big, and grows in stature all the time during the multi-layered finish. It may be hard to dethrone.
