2005 Château Pichon-Longueville (Baron), Cru Classé Pauillac

2005 Château Pichon-Longueville (Baron), Cru Classé Pauillac

There is a wealth of finely-expressed fruit here, silken ripe, tannins and a distinct minerally streak to the long driven finish. One has the impression of gradually building intensity as opposed to heady volume. Sophisticated and refined, this is quite simply a stunning wine and, even with the quality bar set so high at the Château, this ranks among the finest in recent history. Exceptional pauillac.

2005 Château Léoville-Poyferré, Cru Classé St-Julien

2005 Château Léoville-Poyferré, Cru Classé St-Julien

The palate oozes the purest of fruit flavours, a palate that is both vibrant and sensuous yet underneath the ripeness, tannins provide impressive support. Poyferré's benchmarks are elegance, texture and sophistication and these characteristics are so impressively expressed in the '05. A beautiful and natural saint-julien that reveals seduction and clarity of flavour.

2005 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, Margaux

2005 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, Margaux

The 2005 vintage was of course an excellent one across Bordeaux and Château Margaux itself excelled. 2005 Pavillon Rouge is considered to be one of the best second wines ever produced by Château Margaux and, while more immediately accessible than its big-sibling, it shows much of the opulence and refinement of the Grand Vin. Seductive, pure and rich, the nose is beautifully floral and displays delightful harmony. Although the cuvée is high in Merlot, it is abundantly clear that the selection process, first of fruit and later, at the assemblage stage, was carried out to exacting standards.

2005 Château Pontet-Canet, Cru Classé Pauillac

2005 Château Pontet-Canet, Cru Classé Pauillac

Rich and dense on the nose, the aromas here suggest a flamboyant
ripeness and a rich, punchy berry-laden palate to follow. The palate does
not disappoint – rich, concentrated – this makes a bold statement
though finely-balanced. There is a pleasing freshness to the fruit, which
shows Cabernet clearly in the ascendancy with creamy coated, sweet
cassis and blackberry, with notes of smoky mocha and vanillia too. A
firm yet fine tannic grip holds this volume in check, it is however an
undeniably big and chewy wine. This is certainly assured of a bright
future. Some may argue that this is the style of high scores, but no taster
could deny that this is a very serious effort in terms of both stature and
quality. Indeed the quality gained is surely ample reward for the efforts
of Monsieur Tesseron’s team at the resurgent Pontet-Canet.

2005 Château St-Pierre, Cru Classé St-Julien

2005 Château St-Pierre, Cru Classé St-Julien

Impressive appearance, a commanding deep ruby. This is ripe and sweet with crisp berry fruits. Well judged tannins too.
