2003 Aglianico del Vulture Caselle, D’Angelo

2003 Aglianico del Vulture Caselle, D’Angelo

The unique Aglianico grape is produced predominantly in Basilicata and Campania, in the extreme south of mainland Italy, leading to it being touted as the Nebbiolo of the south. Its greatest champions have been the d’Angelo estate, run by brothers Donato and Lucca, who inherited the Cantina from their father Rocco in 1973. The Vigna Caselle is one of the few Riserva wines produced and it is 100% Aglianico, aged in traditional oak barrels for 18-24 months before bottling. The 2003 Vigna Caselle is a mature garnet colour, with smoky black cherry fruit on the nose. The palate is more earthy with truffle and tobacco notes. A very fine Aglianico, which can be drunk now - but there is no hurry.
