2005 Pinot Gris, Calcarius, Rosenberg, Domaine Barmes-Buecher, Alsace
François Barmès has an excellent skill for producing differing styles of Pinot Gris from the terroir available to him. This off-dry Pinot Gris is exuberant, with aromas of fully ripe, scented yellow plum and greengage leading to a palate that is both expansive, yet poised. Layered and viscous with ample, rounded fruit. There is a glorious, honeyed density here but crucially a fine, mineral acidity that builds a lingering finish that is appreciably drier than the analytical residual sweetness would suggest. Very fine.
