2009 Condrieu Clos Boucher, Delas Frères

2009 Condrieu Clos Boucher, Delas Frères

While the Délas winery was founded over 150 years ago in the heart of the Côte du Rhône, it was not really until 1997, and the appointment of acclaimed winemaker Jacques Grange, that the wines really began to capture anyone’s imagination. Now among some of the most sought-after wines in the Northern Rhône, the range of wines from Délas is exemplary and – in the great 2009 vintage – they truly shine.

The grapes come exclusively from the “Clos Boucher” vineyards, which enjoy southern exposure, just like the famous Château Grillet, its closest neighbour. This wine is light gold in colour. It has a wonderful concentration of intense, ripe stone fruit flavours and an elegant honeysuckle fragrance. The 100% new oak ageing gives the wine added structure and finesse, with a fantastic mineral quality on the finish. Very impressive. (Robert Parker: 94 points)

With an impressive female winemaker, Claire Darnaud, at the helm since 2010 (though with experience there dating back to 1996), and considerable investment in the cellar to move to the historic town centre, the wines here are some of the more refined in the region. Careful never to use more than 40% new oak, Claire is a master of her craft.
