With the Varonnières, we are on Michel Chapoutier's favourite soil - granite- and it is easy to see why he likes it so much. The deep purple core is inviting and translates into deep, ripe black cherries on the nose, with a fresh leafiness and a hint of star anise. The palate showcases beautiful purity of blackberry liqueur and freshly-crushed black pepper, with a mineral aspect strongly reminiscent of summer rain on hot stone. Like most wines from Chapoutier, elegance prevails and the finish is very clean with a savoury edge and a structure led by an excellent level of acidity and lightly grippy, fine-grained tannins. This is very fine Crozes indeed and offers a very convincing alternative to Hermitage at a third of the price.
