2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

Beaucastel cites the 'serene' conditions under the Mistral wind in September, which permitted, as elsewhere, grapes to achieve full phenolic ripeness without risk, as the main factor contributing to the success of the vintage. The practice here is to assemble the wine in the months prior to bottling and impressions at this stage come from the individual cépages. Counoise, a traditional variety that contributes leathery notes, in this vintage revealed an uncharacteristic purity and freshness. Syrah was truly beautiful, deep with a discreet yet authoritative note. It was ripe almost to the point of sweetness, showing refined fruit and beautiful tannins. Grenache was fabulously intense, flowing and exhibiting notes of fresh fruit and violets. Mourvèdre, as always an important contributor here, was magnificent, with a juicy, lush nature, very fine tannins and unusual complexity. A hypothetical blend offered glimpses of the intensity, force and thrilling complexity to come.
