 | A surprisingly youthful nose of fine, ripe cassis and vanilla spice. On the palate, this is concentrated and full bodied, while remaining exceptionally well balanced. The fruit is rich and ripe, with notes of blackcurrant and spice, as well as a fine minerality. This is a phenomenal Leoville-Las-Cases.

 | 1998 is a vintage just coming into its own, with many wines beginning to drink beautifully now. Compared with the restraint of some of the left bank wines from the same vintage, this is quite showy and flamboyant, but that is no criticism. The ripe fruit notes of morello cherry and bramble fruit are to the fore, cocooned in fine oak vanillin notes and super-soft tannins. While concentrated and intense, this has a delicate and very pretty, scented finish. Merlot / Cabernet Franc

 | Winemaker Vincent Priou believes that the 2005 vintage is his finest wine to date; certainly we cannot recall a more delicious wine from the property. Scents and flavours opened in the glass to reveal a mid-weight, lithe, attractive pomerol with a plum and fruit-cake dominated palate. Neither overworked nor excessively tannic, this is natural, pure, vibrant pomerol. A touch of minerality broadens black fruit flavours. Very reasonably priced. Merlot / Cabernet Franc

 | The second wine (of Chateau Rauzan-Ségla) is simply entitled "Ségla" which in my humble opinion, represents one of the finest value-for-money wines in Bordeaux: the quality can be exceptionally good.” Neal Martin. Ségla 2005 comprises 54.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 1.5% Cabernet Franc. Classified a deuxième cru classé in 1855, Chateau Rauzan-Ségla has benefited from investment and improvement over the last 20 years, strengthening its position as a true "Super Second".
Deep garnet colour. Pretty aromas of cassis, cedar, cloves and a touch of violets. Earth / loam. Medium acid and a medium+ level of fine tannins. This is generally a harmonious, elegant, second wine from this blockbuster vintage that is approachable now. Long finish.
Merlot / Cabernet Sauvignon / Cabernet Franc

 | From the superb 2005 vintage and the up and coming Côtes de Castillon appellation comes Ch Lacroix. We bought this parcel from JP Moeuix the owners of Ch Petrus no less. Notes of black cherry, fruitcake and Autumnal leaves on the nose, on the palate the structure is beginning to soften but still provides a frame for the rich Merlot fruit which was so successful in 2005, long complex finish. | Lay & Wheeler has purchased from this property for upwards of 20 years and there is absolutely no question in our view that Olivier Sèze is one of the star performers amongst cru bourgeois producers. Year in, year out, Olivier produces an honest bordeaux that is full of character and brings cheer to consumers who wish to purchase quality at a modest price. Again in 2006, Charmail is a wine that should be on everyone’s shopping list. The nose of 2006 Charmail is vibrant and pure with fresh, curranty fruit in the ascendant. The palate is natural and unforced with an appealing vibrancy. The component parts are 45% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and the remainder Petit Verdot. All in all a most attractive bordeaux. Merlot / Cabernet Sauvignon

 | Deep and bright in the glass. The aromas reveal intense sweet cassis with a touch of blackcurrant leaf. There is a fresh, fragrant note on both nose and palate. No lack of substance, there is a gently mouth-filling, fat quality to the black fruit, as well as notes of gravelly minerality. The purity and precision shown highlight the success of this Cabernet-dominant (87%) St.Julien. The silken tannins that seem to typify the vintage in the finer wines of the Médoc do much to lift this above its relatively humble status. An exemplary, streamlined St-Pierre. Robert Parker: 92-94

 | From the superb 2009 vintage and the well-reputed satellite of St Emillion, comes Château La Marzenac. Lussac is one of five villages to the north-east of St-Emilion with the right to add that name to their own. Lussac makes excellent wines, slightly more rustic than its big brother, but rounded and with great charm. We bought this parcel from JP Moueix, the owners of Château Petrus no less.
This is a rich, full bodied wine showing great concentration of flavour. With juicy blackcurrant and expressive morello cherry on the nose. The succulent plum fruit on the palate is supported by a very elegant and slightly smoky sandalwood character. Soft, open with fine tannins and drinking well now, this is an excellent right-bank Bordeaux that displays real character. Dry, Red, Still France Improving/Ready 2011 – 2018

 | A small production of just 600 cases, that comprises 78% Sauvignon Blanc and 22% Semillon. Deep straw in appearance, with notes of honeyed peach and citrus on the nose,. The palate is fine and zesty in nature, with a truly scintillating acidity, linear in style, with a markedly mineral character akin to wet-stone. The overall impression is one of poised mineral infused fruit. Very fine and very, very long. Stunning. Drink 12 – 20

 | One of the estates from the Lafite-Rothschild stable, Rieussec is year in, year out one of the very best Sauternes produced. Dominated by Sémillon as it is, the blend offers a full-bodied, rich and waxy texture with plenty of butterscotch and fudge notes. The sweltering heat of 2003 produced incredibly high levels of natural sugar in the grapes, and the flavours beautifully ripe and almost tropical. This wine, paired with a tarte tatin, would be perfect for a truly hedonistic dessert experience. Semillon / Sauvignon Blanc

 | An exquisitely beautiful sauternes that is clearly at the very highest level of sweet wines of the 2005 vintage. Was for many years under the same ownership as d'Yquem, which has been sold by the Lur Saluces family quite recently. A stunning tropical aroma is an entrée to a beautiful streamlined palate. Glorious composure here. Sweet yes but not cloying, with wave upon wave of high class exotic flavours.

 | Michel has a small parcel within the family holding which is situated in the sector known as Le Grand Maupertui. This is a glossy, intense style with an admirable concentration of fruit and almost cherry liqueur-like notes. There is a startling purity and clarity of flavour as well as a cushioned sense of depth to the expressive fruit. There is a delicacy about this vougeot and an undeniable elegance to the structure.

 | A variation to Benjamin’s usual presentation of the Epeneaux tasting this year. In the past he introduced samples from different vine age plots, however on this occasion he preferred to present samples produced from the various soil types found in the vineyard. | Produced from 70 year-old-vines, which were affected by millerandage in 2008; something many growers see as a positive as it leads to small, concentrated berries. Open and expressive on the nose, with crushed raspberry, cherry and vanilla. Like all Pascal's wines, it is solid with a rich texture and intelligently used expensive new oak. | The Clos des Forêts wine is created from five different old vine cuvées. Beautiful on the nose, witjh fresh, ripe strawberries and hints of vanilla coming through in the background. The palate is plump, showing ripe cherry fruit and bold tannins, which are not aggressive in any way. Great fresh acidity, balancing well with the tannins. This wine will age well and evolve with time. Olivier Leriche said of this wine that ‘energy and freshness are important in this style of vintage’. Pinot Noir 100%

Philippe Colin’s parcel of Chevalier-Montrachet is right next to his 1er cru “Les Demoiselles” and yet the wine is completely different: less ripe but with an amazing minerality and length that follow the citrus- and acacia-scented palate. | Always a complex, traditional styled Châteauneuf, with bags of finesse, 2008 is no exception and the vibrancy inherent in nearly all the wines from this vintage is once more on show. The nose reveals sweet fruit, soft-skinned dark berry fruit, with notes of spice. The palate shows precise, ample fruit in a restrained, linear manner, with notes of smoky damson, cherry, mint and garrigue melding to create a very complete impression. This is beautifully balanced and focused, a very refined 2008.

 | Voge only made their Vieilles Vignes Cuvée in 2008. The wine is quite deep in colour, with a ripe, spicy nose of dark fruits, cassis and blackberry. Mid-weight, this has some structure and a touch of underlying acidity. There is good fruit here, supple and defined, but the finish is soft and round. The tannins are woven into the wine and there is spice and dark fruit to the fore. Not for the long term, but very well crafted, without any of the more rustic side the appellation often exhibits. Cornas always performs well in cooler vintages. Shiraz/Syrah

 | Thierry Usseglio was another grower proud of his 2008s. His decision not to produce the two headlining cuvées and to divert the fruit to the Tradition has unsurprisingly done much to elevate the quality. What else would one expect of 90 year old Grenache? The nose is at once appealing and scented, with fresh raspberry, loganberry and garrigue. True to type, this exudes very fine elegance, but is layered and surprisingly dense in terms of texure. The underlying tannins are silky and sweet, making for a remarkably refined style. Very impressive and great value.

 | Just how much this domaine has improved is evidenced by their superb 2008s - a grower is able to show their class in a more challenging vintage and Marie Giraud was well able to meet that challenge. Production was 40% down - part due to nature, part due to selection. The nose reveals fine, soft and ripe damsony fruit. On the palate, the impression of is of a textural, mouthfilling style, with ripe, peppery, red fruit offset by a beautiful fresh mineral vein. Effortless and refined - the fruit was fully ripe when harvested and it shows plenty of style, making it a very successful 2008.

 | Julien Barrot has produced no Pure or Fiancee in 2008 and the benefits to the Signature cuvée are clear. Grenache from 100-year-old vines makes up the core, but is supported by more than 15% Mourvedre from 60-year-old vines with the balance shared between Cinsault and Syrah. The nose is of focused mineral intensity. A beautiful purity of profound dark fruit spreads across the palate, with a velvet texture of powerful yet fine tannins, seamlessly integrated even at this stage. | Marie Giraud decided to produce this leading cuvée of the domaine, even in this vintage, and her decision has been vindicated. A scented style, with pure raspberry on the nose as well as notes of garrigue. There is a Burgundian elegance here. This is no powerhouse, but a layered, textural Châteauneuf with a broad swathe of lifted fruit and gentle spice. Restrained, long and flowing, this is supremely elegant and classy. A different Grenache de Pierre and one of the most impressive Châteauneuf of the vintage.

 | Aromatic blueberry and blackberry fruit, with a touch of spice and a creamy aspect. The palate is supple and rounded. There is an almost glossy texture, but overridingly there is purity and freshness, which makes for a wine that will have early appeal, as well as the capacity to age. Shiraz/Syrah

 | This has a deeper colour than the Cuvée Gaby and a pronounced earthy, slightly peppery nose. This is a more serious effort, with a lovely texture and ripe supple fruit, backed up by very gentle tannins. There is some grip to this Hermitage, but it is not an extracted heavy wine, showing a delicate touch and some real finesse, demonstrative of very clever winemaking. This will evolve well in the medium term. Shiraz/Syrah

 | Always a wine that shows great elegance, the 2008 is truly representative of the Cazaux style. Fresh aromas of berry and garrigue on the nose lead to a palate of well-focused, silky fruit, with no harsh edges or drying tannins. Very textural with a gradually building sense of volume. The acidity here is most welcome adding a lifted, fragrant vein that runs throughout the wine. Shiraz/Syrah / Mourvèdre / Grenache/Garnacha

 | Bright red. Lively red berry aromas are complemented by notes of garrigue and white pepper. Spicy and precise, offering sweet raspberry and redcurrant flavors that show surprising depth and sneaky power. Closes on a sweet note, with lingering florality and very fine tannins. Drinking beautifully now, this wine will keep for another 5-6 years.

 | As ever, Syrah seems to play a more serious role here and the wine takes time to get into its stride. Fragrant and pure, with a blueberry-compote note on the nose. The palate exudes ample, soft-skinned berry fruit and is quite lifted in style, with herby, garrigue notes. Tapering in on the finish, this elegant style needs more patience than the Saint-Roch, with assertive mineral notes on the finish. Shiraz/Syrah / Mourvèdre / Grenache/Garnacha

 | The final blend here is 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre and this must surely remain one of the great bargains of Châteauneuf. Another great Cristia, which has clearly benefitted from the inclusion of the fruit normally destined for the Vieilles Vignes and Renaissance cuvées. The colour is deep, dark, purple-black. The nose displays rich, ripe black cherry and olive aromas together with bitter chocolate notes. Glossy, concentrated and dark-fruited, with an almost chewy, dense texture. A fine balance of fruit focus and structural weight.

 | The 2008 at Font de Michelle shows good substance (note that Cuvée Etienne Gonnet was not produced in 2008, so the old vine Grenache has been incorporated here). Bright crimson in the glass, the nose exudes peppery cherry fruit and garrigue. The palate follows in a similar vein, with plenty of lush, freshly crushed fruit on show and peppery raspberry to the fore. There is a sweet ripeness apparent here, which is carried beautifully by the higher acidity of the vintage. Impressive results, a very moreish Châteauneuf.

 | The aromas reveal a fine garrigue character, fragrant and appealing. The palate is vibrant in style with a sweet core of deep berry and cherry fruit as well as provençal herb. Classic in style, with a light, fragrant vein. The tannins are well-expressed, gently underpinning attractive fruit and making for a forward-drinking Vieux-Télégraphe that will prove rewarding in its early years as much as with mid-term cellarage.

 | A classic Pégau style, with soft-skinned hedgerow fruits melding with smoky, savoury notes on the nose. More streamlined than opulent on the palate, this is not a heady Grenache-led wine, but more restrained. Cool, focused and linear in style, there is lovely fruit, terrific elegance and vibrancy. The Pégau hallmarks of leather and liquorice are discernible on the finish. It is easy to see why winemaker Laurence Féraud is proud of her 2008s; this is long, elegant and reminiscent of the 2004.

This wine, which is produced only in top vintages and in limited quantity, opens up in the glass to reveal a lovely balance between ripe cassis and blackcurrant, Provençal herbs, pepper, leather and spice. | From a parcel of vines located in Seyssuel, this pure Syrah really shone in our tastings, underlining the quality of this rediscovered terroir. The aromas suggest a cool ripe fruit: Raspberry and perfumed red cherry combine. On the palate, there is a Burgundian refinement, fresh layers of sumptuous fruit, glorious purity and a fresh vein of minerally acidity. The ripeness of fruit is superb, fully ripe but not overblown and only 12.6%. Competes comfortably with the great and good of Côte-Rôtie. Shiraz/Syrah

 | The unique Aglianico grape is produced predominantly in Basilicata and Campania, in the extreme south of mainland Italy, leading to it being touted as the Nebbiolo of the south. Its greatest champions have been the d’Angelo estate, run by brothers Donato and Lucca, who inherited the Cantina from their father Rocco in 1973. The Vigna Caselle is one of the few Riserva wines produced and it is 100% Aglianico, aged in traditional oak barrels for 18-24 months before bottling. The 2003 Vigna Caselle is a mature garnet colour, with smoky black cherry fruit on the nose. The palate is more earthy with truffle and tobacco notes. A very fine Aglianico, which can be drunk now - but there is no hurry. Aglianico 100%

 | Arione is a very small vineyard of just 4 hectares at the southernmost extremity of Serralunga and, therefore, of the entire Barolo zone. The wines of the commune of Serralunga are renowned for their power and longevity. There is slight tawny edge to the deep colour of this wine in the glass and the nose definitely has more of the tar and asphalt qualities that are classic telltales of high quality of Nebbiolo. There is a lovely fruit quality on the palate, which is powerful and long, yet still restrained. Enzo manages to capture the power of the vineyard and this wine has great density, but it is testament to his great winemaking skill that there is also terrific balance and none of the component parts obtrude. This is very different from the Case Nere, because, despite the power and richness, it is so light on its feet.

 | Charme is Dirk Niepoort’s homage to Burgundy and his rarest wine. Charme is all about elegance, more elegance, freshness and texture. Intense, complex and persistent flavours. There is a tension between the weight and depth of the bright, pure fruit and the taut underlying minerality. Nuance and detail combine in this outstanding wine. | We state this every year - and it remains true that we still consider this the best value wine in the Douro. This is the second wine of Quinta do Vale Meão from a blend of eight local grapes, dominated by Touriga Nacional. Perfumed aromas of blueberry, blackberry and violets. The fruit expression is bright and pure in nature, with a rich weight and substance complimented by freshness and tannin. Highly accomplished for the price. | A ten-year vertical tasting of this wine last year demonstrated that this is not one of those new-wave wines which promises much and disappoints with bottle age. This is a wine with a proven ability to age and develop in bottle. Characteristically rich, intense and beautifully textured. The cooler styled ’08 vintage brings an elevated level of elegance and refinement. Extroverted and yet delicately poised! Dry, Red, Still Portugal Improving/Ready 2012 – 2020

 | Unmistakably Douro with the class and quality associated with Niepoort, Vertente is an appealing wine, combining fruit and concentration with finesse. Red summer fruits and wild herb aromas combine with a plush palate framed by smooth, fine tannin. This wine is dense, complex and fresh, pleasant to drink now but also with potential for ageing and improving with time. Dry, Red, Still Portugal Improving/Ready 2011 – 2015

 | A unique opportunity to taste an aged wine from one of Austria’s most acclaimed producers. Produced as a “federspiel” style, this is akin in weight (if not in sweetness) to a German Kabinett. On the nose, this shows characters of ripe lemon and a touch of wet slate. On the palate, there is a broad weight to the wine, but it is offset by a lively acidity and linear minerality that gives this a real sense of refinement. Like many Austrian wines, this is an ideal wine to have with food as it will complement a broad range of styles perfectly. Riesling 100%

 | Willi Bründlmayer considers this his finest Grüner vineyard. Initially reticent on the nose, but showing real potential, with notes of exotic fruit and stone beginning to emerge. Very concentrated, with some tannin in the mouth, this is very serious and will develop complexity with bottle age. Made from 60 year old vines, there is not much of this wine produced, but it is surely one of the best Grüners in the world. Grüner Veltliner 100%

 | An attractive wine, with notes of apricot and lime blossom on the nose, but still quite discreet. The palate is rounded, with notes of white peach and cream, balanced by a riveting acidity. Strictly defined, but ripe and full of flavour, this is a superb Riesling, which will keep fantastically well. Riesling 100%

 | “Alte Reben” translates as old vines, in this case average vine age is over 50 years, this lends the wine power and richness. The grapes were picked in November in great condition, after fermentation in 2-3 year old 300 litre oak barrels the wine was racked and matured in large, 2500 litre barrels. Grüner Veltliner is a great food wine and has particular affinity with a wide variety of fish dishes and Pan-Asian cuisine
"Tasting Note (from producers website): Flowers & fresh (exotic) fruit (citrus and pineapple); apples and pears some peppery spice & just a hint of toasty & nutty aromas , on the palate dry following through with mouthwatering fruit also grapefruit, pineapple, melon, lots of minerals and some peppery spice, concentrated, with a good grip, and harmonically integrating acidity, a quite subtle wine well balanced showing typical minerals and spice in the long after taste."

 | Cool and lean in style, yet retaining the density and length of a great vintage. With notes of grapefruit and pepper on the nose, this is juicy and full of energy on the palate. It also has a stony quality that is reminiscent of a rich Mosel wine. This is a lovely wine, which will deliver greatness with bottle age. Riesling 100%

 | Kellerberg has the coolest climate of Knoll’s Riesling vineyards, making this a much fresher and more floral wine than the Loibenberg, with notes of melon and star anise on the nose. On the palate this has real clarity, with slate, greengage, gooseberry and lime coming through. A pure expression of Riesling from one of the masters of Austria. Riesling 100%

 | Schütt is often firmly in its shell at this stage and can be difficult to taste. With bottle age, however, it can be the most exciting and expressive wine that Knoll makes. A magnum of 1990 enjoyed recently was without doubt one of the best Rieslings I have ever tasted. Almost Chablis-like on the nose, this has notes green apple and wet rocks and, despite 5 grams of residual sugar, tastes bone dry. Limey and intense, with lots of dry extract, what lies beneath? | Near the coast in the north of Chile, the Casablanca wine region is one of Chile's coolest and ideally suited for producing fragrant white wines. Owned by Concha y Toro, Terrunyo has gone from strength to strength due to the work of their acclaimed winemaker, Ignacio Recabarren, whose previous experience was at Cloudy Bay. This is a delightful wine for summer drinking. Less pungently intense than some New Zealand examples, this Chilean white is vibrant and zesty, with notes of lime and gooseberry. The flinty minerality gives this wine a wonderful balance and sense of purity, making it a great match with summer salads and white meats. White, Still Chile Ready 2011 – 2012

 | Very deep in appearance, revealing vibrant ripe berry aromas. This shows a remarkably open nature for such a young vintage port, suggesting a closing down is imminent. The palate exudes sweet, ripe fruit, really quite a substantial style. The layered, textural quality, coupled with the sweet accent, serve to mask firm supportive tannins. Spicy and bold, this promises a very bright future. Blend of different grape varieties

Absolutely bone dry on the palate, the vibrant and enlivening acidity lends it an apparent lightness of touch that belies its colour and fragrance.
