 | Dense ruby in the glass, which exudes notes of spice, morello cherry and raspberry. This fruit profile is carried through on the full-bodied palate, joined by soft, ripe tannins and a hint of liquorice. Fine, polished St. Emilion.

  | The 2004 Moulin-Riche is deep ruby/purple in colour with the fresh, vibrant red fruit scents that typify the wines of Saint-Julien.On the palate there is abundance of ripe, intense fruit backed by structure, tannins and a delicious freshness. An exceptional second wine which still has the ability to age. Blend of different grape varieties

  | Deep cassis appearance. The nose is reminiscent of ripe Victoria plums and black cherries. Voluptuous richness and concentration on the palate overlays a firm, structured core but there is nothing here to suggest over extraction. There is brambly fruit in evidence and an exquisite texture with punchy, vibrant, cool flavours that flow from the beginning to an impressive finish. Maître de Chai Vincent Priou has produced a stunning Beauregard that should be one of the ‘best buy’ Pomerols of the vintage. Dry, Red, Still France Improving/Ready 2011 – 2018

 | An attractive vintage for Chasse-Spleen, revealing good depth of fruit – cherry and blackcurrant – with notes of underbrush and background toast. Elegant, mid-weight and well-knit, there is plenty of direction and freshness here. Keen value anticipated. Robert Parker: 85-87

  | 1970s and vine age coupled with the benefits of biodynamic viticulture have provided complexity and breeding. Ample and beautifully proportioned. Balanced, with tautness, a feature of the 2004 vintage, providing lift and a scintillating, positive character. A honeyed edge adds interest and breadth. Without doubt, one of the most outstanding Clavoillon we have tasted from this great Domaine. Chardonnay 100%

  | Grenache plays the tune here, with input from Syrah and Cinsault. The wine is initially accessible and with considerable charm; it has a solid structure through its ripe tannins. A burgundian quality is beginning to show in this engaging wine.

 | Deep in hue with a purplish rim, the aromas here conjure up notions of summer berry compote, certainly soft-skinned, fully ripe summer fruits. The palate displays good richness, hedgerow characters and subtle spice too. A generous style, but with good poise and definition, there is a slight hint towards the dried fruit characters associated with sur-maturité here. For all its open fruit, there is a grippy sense of structure to this northern Rhône Syrah. Well-judged and the product of classy winemaking.

 | Nearly opaque, but with a gentle sense of extraction evident on nose and palate, this fine côte-rôtie exhibits sweet ripe black fruit aromas; characters of blackberry, woodsmoke, violet and a meaty/savoury quality add complexity. There is no passing over the peppery accent to the fruit on the palate here. Pure, restrained and elegant with vibrant red fruit notes expressed to the finish, the 2004 is seductively styled; silky, fine and lingering. It would not be a cardinal sin to broach this in a couple of years though its harmony is such that it will keep for another six years beyond. A remarkably finely-judged, elegant and traditional example. Dry, Red, Still France Ready 2008 – 2014

 | New to Lay & Wheeler An impressive domaine, that is run by Jean-Paul Versino, the third generation of this Piemontese family to make wine in Châteauneuf. The ‘Tradition’ is a wine of great character. Deep and intense in the glass with a purplish hue. The aromas are striking, offering characters of freshly crushed, sweet, ripe hedgerow fruits. There is such a fine sense of poise here with gently mouthfilling macerated cherry fruit, allied to complex notes of pepper, spice and garrigue, with a smoky, meaty overtone. Very complete and impressive, outstanding for the estate’s normal cuvée. Dry, Red, Still France Improving/Ready 2010 – 2016

 | Medium deep lemon-straw in colour, this has a pronounced nose of orange creams with a hint of pineapple. Ripe, rich and gently nutty with a dry attack. The palate is zesty with tropical fruit flavours cut by taut minerality. While initially rich, the finish is clean and vibrant with good length of fruit flavour. Juicy, mineral and well-balanced. | Very pale as is the norm for Haag's Braunebergs. The nose is a little muted at the moment but the crystal-clear flavours really sing! Beautifully fresh and delicate on the palate with ripe green apple and mineral notes adding dimension to faintly exotic fruit. This is refined and elegant. Produced from a combination of early and later picked fruit from several parcels of the Juffer. Bottled under screw cap. 8.5% by volume. Riesling 100%

 | The first impression here is of stunning purity. A beautifully racy wine with minerals and spices mingling with subtle notes of tropical fruits. Acidity bursts open on the palate to deliver stunning finesse. White stone fruit and greengage flavours develop in the mid-palate. Balanced and poised Riesling, this is kabinett at its very best. | Bright and pale in the glass, with a citrus and white flower nose. On the palate, there is a delicate florality that one might expect more from a Pinot Blanc, but there is also a gentle Riesling lime character that comes through particularly on the long finish. The acidity is zesty without being searing, and there is an undercurrent of minerality lending backbone to the soft fruit characters. Apparently delicate and elegant, yet with enough body to the fruit to warrant some cellar ageing. Riesling 100%
