An impressive wine from an excellent vintage. Attractively cassis on the nose, with notes of woodsmoke and coffee. On the palate this is full-bodied and concentrated, with layers of fine, raipe tannins, dark berry fruit notes and a hint of violet. Very long on the finish. Bright and youthful in appearance with a pure, elegant nose of cassis and sweet berry fruit. Oak maturation has given a creamy, toasty edge to the nose. The palate is focused with dark berry fruit and a herbaceous, leafy character. The tannins and acidity are well balanced and integrated into the wine, making this approachable soon. This is a well-made wine, as one would expect from the Thienpont family.

Charmail has been a favourite château for many years, a tribute to the remarkable consistency achieved by proprietor Roger Sèze at this 22-hectare estate. The wine has a fresh, vibrant nose which exhibits currant fruit and background spices. Lovely harmony here and very classy. Merlot / Cabernet Sauvignon Dry, Red, Still France Ready 2007 / 2009 / 2012

A cru bourgeois with the wow-factor! New owners have invested both in vineyard and chais and the results are clear to see in this outstanding wine which combines the best of the traditional and the modern. Impressive and good value.

| 2004 Château Beauregard, Pomerol | 12 Bottles | £256.50 |
£198.00 |
|
|
Classic pomerol with creamy-coated, red plum fruits and subtle floral notes. The palate shows a pleasing texture – smooth and remarkably elegant with a wealth of generous, glossy fruit. Stone fruit flavours are abundant and well expressed and there is lots of charm evident in this flowing pomerol. At our tasting this stood out for its sheer balance. Whilst many counterparts are dwelling on extraction, Vincent Priou approaches this subject with distinct caution. A very fine pomerol has resulted with 80% of Merlot dominating the blend.

A small property located in the southern Médoc, adjacent to the Margaux properties Siran and Dauzac. A Merlot dominated cuvée, this is open and juicy with luscious, pure fruit. Truly excellent value. Merlot / Cabernet Sauvignon / Cabernet Franc Dry, Red, Still France Ready 2009 / 2010 / 2012

This eight-hectare property is planted with 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc and the assemblage this year reflects this. A mid-weight Pomerol, this reveals delightful, fresh, vivacious fruit on the nose and palate. The texture is smooth and silky in a pure, fruit-driven style. Succulent and pretty Pomerol. Lay & Wheeler has purchased from this property for upwards of 20 years and there is absolutely no question in our view that Olivier Sèze is one of the star performers amongst cru bourgeois producers. Year in, year out, Olivier produces an honest bordeaux that is full of character and brings cheer to consumers who wish to purchase quality at a modest price. Again in 2006, Charmail is a wine that should be on everyone’s shopping list. The nose of 2006 Charmail is vibrant and pure with fresh, curranty fruit in the ascendant. The palate is natural and unforced with an appealing vibrancy. The component parts are 45% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and the remainder Petit Verdot. All in all a most attractive bordeaux. Merlot / Cabernet Sauvignon Dry, Red, Still France Improving 2010 / 2012 / 2015

Creamy, berry fruit on the nose with chocolate nuances. Crunchy berry fruit dominates the even-textured palate. Quite warm but otherwise well balanced with milk chocolate flavours on the finish. Merlot / Cabernet Franc Dry, Red, Still France Improving 2010 / 2012 / 2014

The 2007 d’Armailhac captures sweet, ripe blackcurrant fruit with pleasing freshness on both nose and palate. There is almost a minty note of freshness too. With its cool, ripe fruit, flowing style, and touchs of layered depth, this is fresh, pure and soft, yet impeccably balanced. Not overly complex, but certainly rewarding. Mid-golden appearance with some greenish tints, the nose reveals elements of ripe peach, citrus and sweet vanillin from new oak. The palate shows good breadth with some restraint, Semillon is clearly dominant here. Some viscosity in terms of mouth feel with a well-balanced acidity, this will drink well after a couple of years' patient cellarage.

| 2004 Château Les Ormes de Pez, Cru Bourgeois St-Estèphe | 12 Bottles | £229.50 |
£174.96 |
|
|
Les Ormes de Pez has the vast experience and expertise of the Lynch-Bages team to call upon. Nearly opaque in the glass with intense, dark-cherry fruit on the nose. There is vibrance and ripeness in spades on the palate. Fairly full but nowhere near heady or cumbersome, just layer upon layer of ripe, black fruit with a warm toasty note from new oak. Freshness runs throughout. A driven and focused st-estèphe at a very affordable level. Interestingly just 30% new oak is used at Les Ormes resulting in an appealing fruit-driven style that we expect to develop as a bordeaux to drink in the mid-term.

Made by the same family as Clos Saint-Martin and Château Grandes Murailles. This is a benchmark St-Emilion, with rich, red fruit characters and hints of spice on the nose.
