2007 BORDEAUX EN PRIMEUR

The Tasting Notes

Regular Lay & Wheeler buyers will note that our target list is reduced this year. We intend to concentrate our purchases on wines that we firmly believe in, wines that in our view represent the best of the vintage and, importantly, wines that will be difficult to purchase in future at opening prices. The range of wines may be reduced or extended as prices become known but we will communicate our updated views as the Campaign progresses.

Lay & Wheeler's Opening Offer is likely to include the following wines subject to release price.

SAUTERNES & BARSAC

2007 Château d'Yquem, 1er Grand Cru Classé Sauternes
  Tasting note currently unavailable
  2014-2027 2006 en primeur price £3270

2007 Château Rieussec, Cru Classé Sauternes
A property owned by the Rothschilds of Lafite, winemaker Charles Chevallier is very pleased with the result achieved in 2007. Picking of Sauvignon Blanc commenced on the 11th September, whilst picking of Semillon ( 87% of the harvest) began a few days later but was not completed until 16th November. This early view of an approximate blend reveals a veritable basket of tropical fruit flavours. A layered, broad, complex sauternes that we expect to age well.
  2012-2020 2006 en primeur price £318

2007 Château Coutet, Cru Classé Barsac
A property that has produced stunning wines of late, Coutet has excelled again in 2007. The first impression is of superb lift and Barsac elegance. The scents are an amalgam of exotic fruits with hints of spices. Texturally excellent with smooth-coated, yet exquisitely fresh nectarine flavours broadened by a twist of orange peel and ripe peach.
  2012-2020

2007 Château Doisy-Védrines, Cru Classé Barsac
Unctuous and intense, rich, yet fresh, Doisy-Vedrines has produced a glorious Barsac this year. More intense and deeper in colour and structure than most wines of the commune but it retains acidity to deliver explosive scents and flavours. Rather like tasting liquid apricots with a hint of caramel and spices.
  2012-2017

  2007 Château Nairac
Initially the nose is closed but deep down, evocative, luscious scents emerge. The palate really sings with flavours combining lush, ultra-ripe tropical fruits and the telltale toasty, honeyed, spicy notes of botrytis. Ripe apricot and peach flavours dominate this very impressive Sauternes. Long and rich but beautifully fresh, this is one of the stars of the vintage.
  2012-2017

  2007 Château Bastor-Lamontagne
The first wine amongst an extensive tasting of Sauternes. We loved it but wondered how well it would compare with wines from higher-flying properties later in the tasting. Re-tasting three times during a two hour session it continued to impress. Fresh and vibrant with delicious apricot and nectarine notes and subtle hints of botrytis, this displays beautiful harmony and freshness.
  2011-2016

DRY WHITE

  2007 Château Haut-Brion Blanc, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan
Deeper in hue than the Laville, with enticing aromas of mineral-tinged peach and citrus. The palate is generous, yet streamlined with a taut, mineral vein, juicy ripe peach and a lemony darting acidity. This is so well balanced and beautifully poised with a finish that goes on for minutes. This demonstrates the stunning complexity and poise that regularly single out the whites of Haut-Brion as the finest of all white Bordeaux. The only disappointment is the scarcity of stock!
  2010-2020 2006 en primeur price £3096

2007 Château Laville Haut-Brion Blanc, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan
Pale in the glass with aromas of zesty citrus. The palate is a pristine amalgam of juicy peach, lime and lemon, with wheaty, biscuity nuances as well as leesy minerality. This is taut and tightly wound with plenty of acidity and grip. Intensely mineral, with zippy acidity on the finish. This is really fine with plenty of fruit and intensity. Very classy indeed.
  2010-2018 2006 en primeur price £2994

2007 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan
Fresh and appealing with juicy citrus and peach on the nose. The palate is lively with a really zesty acidity. There is a wealth of fruit here with a delightful grapefruit accent. This white graves shows a fine depth and complexity with a satin texture. Stunning vibrancy and intensity. This is mouthwatering now but will age beautifully too. Very fine.
  2010-2014 2006 en primeur price £858

2007 Château de Fieuzal Blanc, Pessac-Léognan
An attractive white with smoky white peach and juicy stone-fruit aromas. This is tightly wound on the palate with good proportion and smoky, mineral and leesy notes. Very well defined, complete with seriously fine length. Keen value anticipated.
