The Tasting Notes

Regular Lay & Wheeler buyers will note that our target list is reduced this year. We intend to concentrate our purchases on wines that we firmly believe in, wines that in our view represent the best of the vintage and, importantly, wines that will be difficult to purchase in future at opening prices. The range of wines may be reduced or extended as prices become known but we will communicate our updated views as the Campaign progresses.

POMEROL

  2007 Château Pétrus, Pomerol
  Powerful, yet controlled chocolate and black cherry fruit characters on the nose. Sweet, yet supple on the attack, this is gently mouth coating with rich, dark-skinned fruits. There is incredible mineral length and focus, really concentrated and classy.

  2007 Château l'Evangile, Pomerol
  Profound notes of mocha, toast and black cherry on the nose with spicy vanillin nuances. This shows a cool ripeness and suggests fresh fruit compote. A wonderful wine showing velvety texture, lovely sweetness of fruit, freshness and beautiful, creamy tannins.

  2007 Vieux Château Certan, Pomerol
  70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc. A wine Nicolas Thienpont modestly describes as “simple”, merely serves to support the saying that great wine is effortless. On the nose this shows fresh, ripe, subtle notes of black-skinned fruit – dark cherry and plum with hints of dark chocolate. The palate is almost crunchy with wonderfully fresh fruit. Perfumed, elegant, black stone fruit flavours spread across the palate. This is understated, yet perfectly balanced.

  2007 Château La Conseillante, Pomerol
  Winemaker and Estate Director Jean-Michel Laporte advised that the harvest took place between 17th and 27th September and that the assemblage was 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. As one has come to expect of the property in recent years, they have turned out one of the successes of the commune. Whilst not a heavyweight, La Conseillante displays luscious, attractive fruit, poise and refreshing fruit.

  2007 Château L'Eglise-Clinet, Pomerol
  Denis Durantou believes 85% to15% to be the most perfect blend for Merlot and Cabernet Franc and one that he employs in this wine. Deep glossy purple in colour with a black core. Perfumed cherry blossom notes precede a glorious array of dark skinned fruit on the nose with lovely toasted oak notes emerging. The palate is taut and mineral with a core of ripe, dark skinned fruit. With very fine tannins, this is long, juicy, fresh and laden with fruit.

  2007 Château Certan de May, Pomerol
  Deep purple to the core with a ripe, minty, blackcurrant nose and subtle roasted coffee bean notes. Sweet plum, damson and black cherry fruit on the attack, this shows juicy freshness and a certain elegance in the mid palate. Focused mineral length with grippy black fruit-skin flavours.

  2007 Château Gazin, Pomerol
  There is more Cabernet Sauvignon than usual in this wine - 13% blended with 82% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, helping the power and focus of the wine in this vintage. Deep and opaque with a purple-black core and a rich, ripe plum and fruit cake nose. With hints of blackcurrant and coffee, the palate is firm, but with a core of crunchy plum and cherry fruit and subtle coffee and toast notes on the finish. Medium to low acidity, yet this is juicy and of good length with excellent tannin structure.

  2007 La Petite Eglise, Pomerol
  A beautifully dense, ripe nose with aromas of bitter chocolate, black forest fruits, plums and damsons and an iron-like mineral note. Wonderful sweet ripe fresh red and black fruit on the attack with a silky flowing texture. There’s a dense ripe core of fruit, yet with a lightness of touch. This is elegantly weighted across the mid-palate and into the finish.

  2007 Château Nenin, Pomerol
  Smoky and intense with notes of dark chocolate, ripe berry and hints of mint. Lovely texture, this is juicy, fruit-rich and long. The tannins are powerful, yet ripe and in balance with plenty of fruit to help them integrate. A soft, velvet- textured mouthful. Lovely healthy fruit on a long, mineral finish.
