Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita
Normally a subdivision of an existing DOC, a more restrictive identification for higher quality Italian wines. DOCG wines are first analysed and tasted by government–licensed personnel before being bottled. Like DOCs, DOCGs may incorporate further quality designations such as Classico (the heart of the producing region), Superiore (indicating higher alcohol and other quality parameters) and Riserva (for wines subject to additional barrel ageing).
