Cru Bourgeois
An historic classification self-awarded by a substantial grouping of Médoc Chateaux (initially over 400) which were excluded from the 1855 rankings. Can be viewed as the next rung down. There are presently three sub-divisions within the Crus Bourgeois, but these distinctions are rarely used on the label. In 2003 the Cru Bourgeois classification was subject to a status review, however the results, where numerous chateaux were demoted, have been challenged in the courts.
