Glaziers’ Hall
9 Montague Close, London Bridge, SE1 9DD
The building that is now Glaziers' Hall was erected in 1808 as a single storey warehouse on Hibernia Wharf. A further two office storeys were added in the 1850’s. Glaziers' Hall is situated alongside London Bridge and adjoining the venue are the infamous "Nancy's Steps". This was where poor Nancy met her unfortunate demise at the hands of cruel Bill Sykes, in the novel by Charles Dickens.
The Hall is home to the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass, one of the Livery Companies of the City of London. First recorded in the 1328 list of Guilds, the Worshipful Company of Glaziers achieved the Grant of Arms in 1558. 1638 marked the Company’s first charter granted by Charles I and, although Charles II rescinded this, it was fully restored in 1689 by William and Mary. A supplemental charter was granted in 1956 by Queen Elizabeth II.
The Glaziers’ original Hall in Fye Foot Lane was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. The current Hall from which the Company conducts its business was acquired and refurbished in 1977, and was formally opened by HRH the Duchess of Kent, an Honorary Freeman of the Company, in 1978.
Glaziers’ Hall is also ‘home’ to two other Livery Companies; Scientific Instrument Makers and the Launderers; both of whom use the Hall for their formal occasions.
