Lay & Wheeler's history
Dating back to 1854, Lay & Wheeler is an independent, family-owned concern. The company was started by John Lay in 1854 but soon passed into the hands of the Wheeler family. There have been Wheelers at the helm ever since, and Johnny Wheeler took up the reins from his father, Richard in 1997. Originally a traditional merchant, based in a shop in Colchester, Lay & Wheeler has evolved into a merchant for the 21st Century with a thriving mail order and e-commerce sector and online shopping via this website. Although specialising in fine, old world wines (Burgundy in particular), Lay & Wheeler are always on the look out for exciting new producers from all over the world. The Sales Team, based at the new Headquarters in the picturesque Suffolk countryside at Holton St. Mary, are enthusiastic and well-versed in the wines offered.
Over the years, Lay & Wheeler has won many prestigious awards including Joint Winner Wine Merchant of the Year, 1988, Independent Wine Merchant of the Year and the Burgundy Specialist of the Year awards, 1997, the International Wine Challenge Creativity Award and Regional Wine Merchant of the Year, Eastern England, both in 2005.
