2010 Bourgogne Blanc Cuvée Oligocène, Patrick Javillier		12 Bottles	£147
15:53 31/01/2012Attractively ripe and rich on the nose, with notes of ripe apple and white stone fruits. On the palate however, this is very mineral and fresh, giving it an elegant and refined nature. The broad fruit is held in check by the brightening acidity and structural minerality and the overall impression one gets is of freshness and appealing fragrant fruit. Sourced from vineyards surrounding the villages of Chassagne and St-Aubin, this polished example demonstrates just how good a generic White Burgundy can be in the hands of a talented producer. An inviting nose of ripe pears and apples with a subtle buttery note. Deliciously fresh on the palate with added complexity and richness derived from ageing on the lees in oak. The first domaine bottling of this cuvée dates back to 1934 and, with a combined total of 95 vintages under their belt, father and son team Michel and Frédéric have considerable experience and knowledge of their terroir. A bright, limpid appearance, with vibrant, crunchy red fruit on the nose and a crisp, redcurrant laden palate. Really refreshing, and really rather drinkable. An exceptional passetoutgrains, sourced from low-yielding 85-year-old vines. There is a great deal more concentration and depth to the vibrant redcurrant and cherry fruit, with a degree of tannic grip that would suggest there is more to come with a little more time in bottle. 2010 Bourgogne Rouge, Ghislaine Barthod		12 Bottles	£189
Seriously impressive Bourgogne Rouge from this fantastic winemaker, although the vines yielded fifty percent less fruit than in 2009. The bouquet is scented with lovely damson fruit and raspberries, leading to a crisp, fresh palate where the oak lends excellent weight and depth. 2009 Bourgogne Rouge, Anne Gros		12 Bottles	£219
Darkly fragrant on the nose, but perhaps a little ungiving at this stage. The palate shows surprisingly robust tannins that encase the almost-floral dark berry fruit core. Immediately and unignorably sweet and fragrant on the nose, with notes of crunchy, bright red fruit. The palate is vibrant and appealing, with a fine lacy tannic structure and vibrant-natured berry fruit to the fore. Mouthwatering and moreish, this is a delight. Quite open and intense on the nose, with notes of ripe apple and lemon zest. On the palate, this is dense and mouthcoating, with ripe citrus notes and pure white fruit notes. While undeniably weighty and concentrated, this is nevertheless a harmonious and effortless style. Tremendous, intense, beautiful Grand Cru Chablis. Lying mid-slope, just below Clos du Roi on the famed Hill of Corton, this Bressandes has an intense nose full of dark autumnal hedgerow fruits. The silky tannins provide the ideal structured backbone for pure damson and loganberry fruit on the palate. The long finish is a fitting conclusion to this serious and elegant wine. 2010 Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Les Vercots, Follin-Arbelet		12 Bottles	£327

With the same underlying rock formation as neighbouring Le Montrachet, here the soil is a little deeper and the wines a little sturdier. Fontaine-Gagnard’s Bâtard has an exotic nose of apples caramel and sweet spice. There is an opulence and richness to the palate, with fine balancing acidity. 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge 1er Cru Clos-St-Jean, Jean-Marc Pillot		12 Bottles	£360
While better known for his whites, Jean-Marc's red Chassagne is a tour-de-force of winemaking and a considerable cut-above many Côte-de-Beaune reds. Intensely spicy red fruit notes are immediately evident on the nose, which is open and appealing. On the palate, this shows lovely sappy, ripe fruit and exceptionally fine tannins. Jean-Marc describes it as having "beaucoup de finesse" and certainly it seems a seamless style, carrying its weight and density apparently effortlessly. 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Maltroie, Fontaine Gagnard		12 Bottles	£315
Situated in the heart of the appellation, the rich marlstone subsoil produces wines of greater density. Fruit is sourced from low yielding 50 year old vines, the wine displays a tropical fruit nose with more overt buttery, toasty characters coming through on the palate. 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Caillerets, Fontaine-Gagnard		12 Bottles	£417
As the name suggests, stony soil predominates in this vineyard, perched higher up on the hill from which come some of the best examples of Chassagne. A core of crystalline stonefruit on the nose, which shows wonderful purity and expression. LOW STOCK 2010 Chassagne -Montrachet, 1er Cru La Romanée, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard		6 Bottles	£234
A restrained nose of lemon and lime coupled to multilayered palate with a lithe minerality, which shows great potential. Despite its elevated position, La Romanée is renowned for producing wines of great structure and intensity and is widely held to be the finest 1er Cru in Chassagne. 2010 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard		6 Bottles	£540
With holdings of a third of a hectare, Fontaine-Gagnard have a considerable proportion of this tiny Grand Cru. A brooding nose tinged with tropical fruit and a whiff of smoke, the palate shows its weight and structure without being overbearing, lovely and fresh with perfect poise. Sourced from vineyards bordering Puligny, this elegant villages wine bears the hallmark of its origin and the style of wine for which Philippe is best known – elegance and subtlety, rather than weight and power. Notes of pure lime on the nose with an underlying mineral austerity. The palate crackles with life and freshness, in addition to the citrus fruit profile there is well handled oak which adds a touch of volume and richness to this extremely classy villages Chassagne. 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes, Domaine Philippe Colin		12 Bottles	£378
Philippe’s father Michel retired in 2003 and passed his vineyard holdings onto his two sons. Philippe, the elder of the two, is a Chassagne specialist with holdings of 11.5 hectares, the domaine follows the principles of lutte raisonée to maximise vineyard health. The wines receive between 12-15 months in oak and the emphasis is on subtlety rather than power. From 60-65-year-old vines grown on the Puligny side of the appellation, there are complex aromas of toasted hazelnuts, limes and apple blossom. There is initially a lightness of touch to its mineral driven palate, which fills out on the mid-palate to reveal a complex and multilayered finish. Aromatically complex, with apple, greengage, spice and a touch of smokiness. The palate is really intense and focused, relatively full bodied and with a wonderful texture. Quite tight and closed at the moment, displaying a more serious and mineral-driven nose. There is such fine acidity and minerality here, with hints of citrus, green apple and chalk. 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Remilly, Colin-Deléger		12 Bottles	£360
Michel Colin kept his 3 favourite parcels of vines when his 20 hectare estate was divided between his two sons. This one sits next to Grand Cru Chevalier-Montrachet and produces oily, rich wines with laser like acidity. The 2010 is simply stunning with toasted hazelnut, creamy texture and fresh, citric feel of the vintage. This has the same floral nature on the nose as the Tête de Murgers, with hints of white peach, but with a great sense of depth and power. On the palate, this shows a finely tuned acidity and minerality, making this quite structured and serious. 2010 Meursault 1er Cru Blagny, Michel Bouzereau		12 Bottles	£357
The highest 1er Cru of the Domaine, 300m above sea level with more argillaceous soil, has produced a wine with a heady yet delicate nose. Freshness is the keyword here, with apple pie and crab-apple notes and a nice touch of smokiness from the 25% new oak used on all Jean-Baptiste's premier crus. The underlying minerality and precise acidity pull all this together to make an excellent wine from the heights of the Côte de Beaune. Chardonnay 100% Dry, White, Still France Leave 2013 – 2017

Pure and elegant are the words, which immediately spring to mind when first tasting this wine. 2010 Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru La Genelotte, Domaine Comtesse Bernard de Cherisey		12 Bottles	£399
The lovely rich mealy quality provides a fabulous depth to the lime citrus character, thanks to the heavier clay in this top vineyard site. This is a delicious wine with a round, complex and buttery mouthfeel whose piercing acidity and fine mineral core impart a tremendous focus and freshness. 2010 Meursault Les Tillets, Patrick Javillier		12 Bottles	£288
Always a favourite of ours, this vintage is no exception. Lemon sherbet and peach notes come through on the appealing nose, drawing one into the wine. The rich core is full and rounded, with a creamy-nature to the fruit, yet it is all beautifully balanced by an attractive citrus acidity. A stony minerality gives this a taut structure and sense of poise. Very good, quite classic-seeming Meursault. Chardonnay 100% Dry, White, Still France Leave 2013 – 2016
2010 Meursault Les Clousots, Patrick Javillier		12 Bottles	£324
The name is derived from the two parcels of vines used for the blend, Crotots and Les Clous. While this is rich and full on the nose, with notes of ripe citrus and peach, the structure on the palate is far more taut and structural. There is a great depth of ripe fruit, with white stone fruit notes, yet it is balanced by mouthwatering acidity and a pronounced minerality, giving this a delighful, balanced character. Serious and finely-tuned Meursault. Chardonnay 100% Dry, White, Still France Leave 2013 – 2016
2010 Meursault Tête de Murger, Patrick Javillier		12 Bottles	£447
Another blended name, this time from Casse-Tête and Murgers de Monthelie. Softly rounded and quite delicate on the nose, this has attractive floral and soft greengage fruit on the palate. There is a subtle smokiness to this, which is both attractive and appealing, blending with creamy-natured citrus fruit and soft, graphite minerality. On the finish, this is very long, but almost delicate, with notes of white flowers and a dart of citrus acidity. Lovely. Chardonnay 100% Dry, White, Still France Leave 2014 – 2018

Perfectly poised and balanced, a delightful and delicate floral nose leads through into a palate that shows notes of intense ripe fruit and a complex smoky minerality. For Meursault Charmes, this shows a lovely sense of poise and refinement; it is a ripe and full wine, but with that power held in check by the bright acidity and balancing mineral structure. Perfectly situated mid slope and out of the shadow of the Hill of Corton, Ile des Vergelesses is regarded as the best 1er Cru in Pernand. The limestone and clay soils have produced a wine of stunning quality that would rival many a wine from the Côte du Nuits. The epitome of elegance and grace, showing both concentration and supreme balance. This is aromatically complex with dazzling raspberry leaf, wild strawberry and morello cherry aromas, infused with savoury complex elements. Medium-bodied with such vivid and bright fruit flavours that the wine seems to dance across the palate. Concentrated, long, harmonious and precise. Quite floral, blue fruit with refreshing purity and subtle oak. The tannins are very tight, but they beautifully balance the fleshy, good quality fruit. An incredibly perfumed and pretty nose, with aromas of white peach, citrus, greengage and white flowers. Concentrated, pure with very fine acidity providing detail and focus. A Grand Cru in all but name Demoiselles is effectively a corner of Chevalier-Montrachet and one of the smallest and most desirable 1er Crus in Puligny. With a leesy, almost smoky nose it is refined and stylish with great concentration. On the palate there are notes of apricot and blossom with new oak and great length, it hurts to say it but this is a (relative) bargain! This was our last visit of the day and Michel was kind enough to open a bottle of 2002 as an aperitif, what a wine that was and I suspect the 2010 will teurn into something similar. If you were able to combine the best bits of his 1er Cru Chassagne and Pulignys and add 2 or 3 layers you get somewhere close to the Chevalier. The pride and joy, stated Manou, when we tasted this wine. The brothers Humbert own half of this two hectare vineyard and their vines average 40 years old. Blended using 40% of whole bunches (Manou first trialled this technique in 2009, with 30% whole bunches and finds it opens up the aromatics of the wine). From 80-year-old vines, the nose is aromatic and striking, an array of dark bramble fruits, violets and lavender. Tasting the wine at this early stage gives a glimpse of what is to come. It is all there with the fruit, the tannin albeit a little dry at the moment, but that will mellow with ageing. Showing a good balance, with a long finish. Excellent, as always. Located under Mazis-Chambertin, there is a real difference in terroir on this plot. Plush fruit aromas on the nose, with hints of violets and rosemary. The palate mirrors the nose, and there are layers of fruits and herbaceous characters, the whole wine balanced and in perfect harmony. A real mineral finish given by the light layer of clay topsoil and deep rooted vines. There is so much to say about this wine due to the intense complexity and sheer quality of the wine making. This is profound, yet beautiful; broad-shouldered, yet fine. Although, there is a touch of oak on the finish, the lasting impression one has of this wine is of tremendous freshness. Situated at the top of the Hill of Corton, this is the undoubted star of Corton. Produced from vines with a minimum age of 60 years and at under 20 hectolitres per hectare, this is a wine of concentration, complexity and immense class. The nose is reminiscent of a top Vosne-Romanée, rich and intensely-scented, but with a beautiful freshness and floral nature. Full-bodied, voluptuous and concentrated, there is so much going on. Rich strawberry and loganberry flavors are wrapped up in velvety tannins, to give the most sumptuous of palates. Though there is great concentration, there is plenty of acidity to keep things fresh and harmonious. Minimum intervention and use of oak has produced a wine of such purity and energy, which very much sums up the style of Chandon de Briailles.
