A Grand Cru in all but name Demoiselles is effectively a corner of Chevalier-Montrachet and one of the smallest and most desirable 1er Crus in Puligny. This was our last visit of the day and Michel was kind enough to open a bottle of 2002 as an aperitif, what a wine that was and I suspect the 2010 will teurn into something similar. If you were able to combine the best bits of his 1er Cru Chassagne and Pulignys and add 2 or 3 layers you get somewhere close to the Chevalier. Tight and unyielding at the moment this will evolve magnificently in the bottle. Chardonnay 100%

Such a pretty nose of strong floral aromas. The wine bursts with full, mouthfilling cherry flavour. Really fresh ripe fruit and then comes the burst of refreshing acidity, which gives total balance to the tannin which lingers off into the distance. This wine always a firm favourite, this year's vintage will be no exception. Pinot Noir 100%

| 2009 Echézeaux Les Loachausses Grand Cru, Anne Gros | | 6 Bottles | £480 | |
Quite closed on the nose initially, but revealing sweet ripe fruit with time. There is a delicate nature to this wine, with the wild strawberry fruit nature having an almost confiture-like character, without being over-ripe. The tannins are evident, but finely realised and there is a dart of minerality that gives this a beautiful sense of balance. Strictly Limited Allocation Pinot Noir 100%

Strawberries and cream, with a touch of pencil lead and smoke on the nose. Multi-faceted, endowed with great structure but possessing immediate appeal and with a long, mellow subtly spicy finish. “This is one of the more complete versions of Echézeaux, retaining the intricate detail which this vineyard should show along with a dimension of energy and power.” Jasper Morris MW. | 2010 Echézeaux Grand Cru, Georges Mugneret-Gibourg | | 6 Bottles | £597
Beautiful on the nose, with attractive, almost-floral notes. The palate is incredibly pure, with a layered, silky texture. Dark, richly concentrated fruits are lent structure by very fine, ripe tannins. This is however a subtle, reined-in and elegant wine. Feminine and seamless, with delicate, floral notes coming through on the finish, this is a wine that shows its purity and quality in an apparently effortless manner. Certainly one of our favourites in this vintage - its only disadvantage being the quantity available. Strictly Limited Allocation Pinot Noir 100%

| 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenots, Humbert Frères | | 12 Bottles | £480 | |
The pride and joy, stated Manou, when we tasted this wine. The brothers Humbert own half of this two hectare vineyard and their vines average 40 years old. It was wonderful: polished, pure fruit nose showing good freshness. Deep rich, morello cherry, with layers of velvety chocolate notes, then right on the end a little spice, nutmeg and vanilla pod. This is a very expressive wine, stunningly balanced throughout with a real refined composure . It builds up in flavour to a stunning finish. Pinot Noir 100%

| 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Craipillot, Humbert Frères | | 12 Bottles | £618 | |
Blended using 40% of whole bunches (Manou first trialled this technique in 2009, with 30% whole bunches and finds it opens up the aromatics of the wine). From 80-year-old vines, the nose is aromatic and striking, an array of dark bramble fruits, violets and lavender. Tasting the wine at this early stage gives a glimpse of what is to come. It is all there with the fruit, the tannin albeit a little dry at the moment, but that will mellow with ageing. Showing a good balance, with a long finish. Excellent, as always. Pinot Noir 100%

| 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle, Humbert Frères | | 12 Bottles | £618 | |
Located under Mazis-Chambertin, there is a real difference in terroir on this plot. Plush fruit aromas on the nose, with hints of violets and rosemary. The palate mirrors the nose, and there are layers of fruits and herbaceous characters, the whole wine balanced and in perfect harmony. A real mineral finish given by the light layer of clay topsoil and deep rooted vines. There is so much to say about this wine due to the intense complexity and sheer quality of the wine making. One has to be quick however, as Manou only produces 600 bottles in total for this cuvée. Strictly Limited Allocation Pinot Noir 100%

| 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-St-Jacques, Humbert Frères | | 12 Bottles | £678 | |
Made from 60+-year-old vines. A later malolactic fermentation means this showed more woody notes at this stage, but it was still plush, polished and cordial. Cassis on the nose and palate. Rich and bold yet wonderfully refined and elegant. There is a real concentration of flavour and aroma thanks to Manou and Frédéric's clonal selection that produces small grapes and very little juice. At this stage, this shows just a glimpse of what is to come from this amazing wine. Strictly Limited Allocation Pinot Noir 100%

Made from the young vine fruit from the Grand Cru vineyard of Ruchottes-Chambertin, this is a considerable cut above the average Gevrey. Darkly appealing on the nose, with an immediate sense of sweet, ripe fruit and an equally immediate sense of almost mint-like freshness. The palate is almost delicate, with a very refined structure and immense purity, yet with a concentrated core of fruit at its heart. Excellent. Strictly Limited Allocation Pinot Noir 100%

Boldly and darkly fragrant on the nose, with black berry notes that continue onto the palate. There is great concentration here and spicy, mineral complexity, derived from the deeper roots of the very old vines. The tannins are more evident here than in many of the other wines from the domaine, but they are balanced by the expressive nature of the fruit and the exquisite vein of freshness than runs throughout. With a long and attractive finish, this is a tour de force of Grand Cru Burgundy. Strictly Limited Allocation Pinot Noir 100%

| 2010 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots, Georges Mugneret-Gibourg | | 6 Bottles | £258 | |
From a site near to Vosne Romanee, this is a more elegant style of Nuits. The palate is sweet, ripe and concentrated, with a darker and yet more heady profile than the Chambolle. Appealingly open on the nose, with soft notes of nectarine and greengage fruit, as well as hints of white flowers. The palate is rounded, with soft white stone fruit characters blending with ripe, warm citrus notes. There is minerality here, but it is gently structural rather than intensely evident. | 2010 Nuits St-Georges Les Poisets, Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux | | 12 Bottles | £375
A fine lieu-dit, with the domaine’s vines lying just below the exceptional 1er cru Les Cailles. A tighter, more structured and tannic expression, balanced against a core of pure, sensuous fruit so typical of this domaine. Old vine age contributes an extra degree of depth and complexity, and makes this an intelligent buy at this level. Pinot Noir 100%

| 2010 Corton Grand Cru Clos du Roi, Chandon de Briailles | | 6 Bottles | £360 | |
Situated at the top of the Hill of Corton, this is the undoubted star of Corton. Produced from vines with a minimum age of 60 years and at under 20 hectolitres per hectare, this is a wine of concentration, complexity and immense class. The nose is reminiscent of a top Vosne-Romanée, rich and intensely-scented, but with a beautiful freshness and floral nature. Full-bodied, voluptuous and concentrated, there is so much going on. Rich strawberry and loganberry flavors are wrapped up in velvety tannins, to give the most sumptuous of palates. Though there is great concentration, there is plenty of acidity to keep things fresh and harmonious. Minimum intervention and use of oak has produced a wine of such purity and energy, which very much sums up the style of Chandon de Briailles. Strictly Limited Allocation Pinot Noir 100%
